Permaculture: Do we need Crisis and Change?
Answer:
Crisis is a great motivator, and wakes people up to change
and inovation.
The Lethargy that comes with stability can lul people into false sense of security and tends to stop progress
Like the dark ages
So a bit of panic it healthy
lets hope the crisis is not in exess of peoples abilties to adjust, recover and shine
Terrance McKenna called these inovative moments in history times of novelty and the peaks were called renaisance.Invariable these times were associated with democracy and Mushroom cults(Terrance“s pet subject ,which he was trying to prove ,and did)
The non creative times were called times of habit and went hand in hand with religious domination.Such as the Dark ages
most people are resistant to change unless there's a pressing reason. stability, or the status quo, can be beneficial if existing practices are sufficient to provide for the present AND for the future. this is where we run into problems today. the present has been taken care of just fine. we seem to have forgotten about the future beneficiaries (i use the term loosely) of our actions today.
whether it's environmental degradation, enormous debt, or the loss of social security in the us, we as a society have gotten away from planning for the future and are preoccupied with what's convenient to do for today. this is good for the now, but eventually will lead to a CRISIS, when the money is gone, or the earth becomes inhospitable. by then the time for CHANGE has long gone: it's too late. this is the peak time as you note, but any effective change will arrive far too late. or worse, the debt will be handed down stil further.
the trick is to have individuals whose opinions are respected and unbiased study the impact our NOW is having on our LATER. we can go about our business with stability, ideally trusting those who would know how to avert impending crises. it's not magic: it's called forward thinking.
in fact, if we can identify avert the crisis and change gradually and soon enough, it will almost seem like stability. and we'll ALL be happy with that.
