What's up with these squirrel's tails?

A lot of the squirrels in my area have these really thin stripped tails. It looks kind of like a racoon tail but not bushy. I was wondering if it was like a disease or a genetic freak thing? What could it be?

Answer:
That is because it sounds like you are looking at a ground squirrel and sad to say that is what they look like. They are not the large fluffy Grey Squril and they do not sash the tail around or look even 1/2 as healthy. There are a lot of different typs off squril however the ground squril is quite honestly the most pathetic of the bunch.
Are you sure they're not chipmunks?
There many types of squirrel's. Yours are the thin tail variety. Where I live we have thin tails, bushy tails and several colors as well. Some are grey and some are brown. Interesting question because I had not given it any thought before. I suppose it needs some investigation. Oh yes and we have smart#** ones also.
Are you sure they ARE squirrels? They sound more like chipmunks than squirrels.
That is so weird I have noticed some of the squirrels in my neighborhood with almost rat like tails, no fur on them or very little and was wondering the same thing
