What are some ways to keep deer out of a garden?

Fences but how high? 6ft? Are there other ways besides a fence?

Answer:
Here's a site with a college slide show about fencing:

You typically need to be about 8' high. If you want to save some money you could use 2' of chicken wire ($50 for 150ft with 1" holes) then get a package of plastic deer netting from Home Depot or Lowes to use above that. The netting comes in 7' X 100' rolls ($11-12/ea) so if you use it above the chicken wire (with a 6" overlap) you'll have an 8.5ft fence. You can use 10' T-Posts ($7/ea) to wrap the fence around. Buy the chicken wire at a feed store like Big R or Tractor Supply Company in 105' rolls to save money.

You may want to get 3-4' chicken wire so you can bend 1-2ft of it onto the ground (on the outside part of the fence). This will stop digging critters from getting into your garden because they will hit the fence as they try to dig.

You could do a 150' circumference garden for $170-200.

Good Luck!!
I have a garden and lots of deer in the area. I keep them out by taking dog fur (we have two dogs) and stuffing it in old nylons and hanging the satchels around the perimeter of the garden. The smell scares them off.
Deer can easily jump 6'ft fences. I would recommend going to any gardening store and buying some predator urine.
Sounds gross, but it keeps them away.
get a couple of dogs, good sized ones. German Sheppards would do good.
A scarecrow with an orange vest.

any urine from a natural predator should keep them away
have some guy pee around the perimeter of you garden or get a dog and let it do it. Also bars of soap or a few rags that have been dipped in laundry detergent. Any thing that smells human should keep them away.
Deer can be very determined.
The National Parks use Moth Crystals for the perimeter of
the camping grounds to keep all critters away.

Just a thought..
Don't get a fence, they might try to jump over it and get hurt and your neighbors might report you for Cruelty to Animals. I know I would!

Go to Meijer's (if you have one by you) or Target and go to the Sporting Good Section. They should have some powders or something of the sort that doesn't harm the deer but it makes the plants tastes bitter... if you can't find it, go to a pet store and buy some spray that does the same thing but with dogs. Trust me, it works with deer too.
You would have to make your fence much too high to keep the deer out. There are several deer resistant plants as well as deer repelling plants that you can place around the perimeter of your garden or property. Here are a couple websites you may want to look at:

if you dont like the idea of predator urine, there are also deer repellents with catchy names such as "not tonight deer". you can probably find them on the internet somewhere.
well let them saty in your garden they are feasting on your garden because all they're natural food is being destroyed. Visit my website :

If you build a fence, you will want it about 8 feet tall. That is what was worked for me. My neighbor has had good success with electric fencing. Rabbits and small creatures can still get in, but the deer learn after one or two tries not to go near. And for those of you concerned about hurting a deer, electric fences are safe. A quick jolt and that is all.
I wouldn't mess around with spraying the plants with bitter sprays. My experience has been that simply angers the deer and they trample the plant they just tried.
A fence works. A little expensive, but worth it.
I have heard of people planting a separate garden for the deer and other animals if you are into that type of thing.
Pie plates that are cut along the edge like the pinwheels or even pinwheels the bright red or yellow attracts them and the motion scares them.. large farms hear use edging around the garden of plants that the deer do not like and they keep away from the whole thing.. good luck fighting mother nature.
