What exactly are compact flurescent light bulbs ?
Answer:
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent light bulb or an energy saving lightbulb, is a type of lamp (light bulb) designed to fit into roughly the same space as an incandescent lamp, but with the advantages of a fluorescent lamp. Many CFLs can directly replace an existing incandescent lamp and fix in the existing incandescent light fixtures.
Compared to incandescent lamps of the same luminous flux, CFLs have a longer rated life and use less energy. A CFL can save over US$30 in electricity costs over the lamp’s lifetime compared to an incandescent lamp and save 2000 times their own weight in greenhouse gases [2] The initial purchase price of a CFL is higher than an incandescent lamp of the same output, although this cost may be quickly recouped in energy savings assuming average bulb use.
Although CFLs do radiate a different spectrum of light than incandescent lamps,[3] recent technological advances have reduced that difference dramatically. The light emitted by the best soft white CFLs available today is similar in quality to standard bulbs.[4]
I'm not 100% sure of what they are, but then again does anybody know 100% of what an incandecent light bulb is? All I know is that fluorescent bulbs use about 75% less energy than an incandecent light bulb does and that's good enough for me. For the exact detail about Fluorescent bulbs, here's the wikipedia link:

First, we need to talk about fluorescent light bulbs.
Fluorescent light bulbs work by passing electricity through a gas, instead of a thin wire. That's a much more efficient way to make light because it converts more of the electricity into light, and less into heat.
Regular fluorescent light bulbs are large and need large light fixtures specially designed for them. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are made smaller, so they can simply and easily replace old fashioned incandescent bulbs which are in a smaller space.
They are "compact" light bulbs that cost about 10 as much as incandescent bulbs of the same wattage, and which put out light that is so horrible even the greenie-wackos admit they are"not suitable" for all uses (translation: the light it so poor, you will wreck your eyes if you try to read by them). This is the same old game of making something "obsolete" so that everybody has to replace what they already have...and by the way it just happens to make obscene amounts of money for a few select people and/or companies. If CFL were any good, you would not have to coerce people into using them, or as has been suggested in a few states, actually outlaw those bad ol' incandescent bulbs. Have you ever heard of a product that was really better (and saved people money too) that had to be literally rammed down peoples throats? No, and I haven't either.
