Is there a trick to using Energy Saving bulbs ?

I heard that in order for the energy saving bulbs to have the 7 year life span, when you 1st turn it on, you are supposed to NOT turn it off for a specific amount of time, in order for it to "learn" to last a long time. I have checked several manufacturer's packages and searched the web, but cannot find the time length. I think it is an hour, but not sure.

I wrote to Phillips and never got a reply. We bought a pkg of 4, and bulb #1 burned out in less than a week, the 2nd and 3rd have been going for a while, but I left them on for an hour. #4 is still in the package.

Does anybody know for sure how long the initial "on" time should be?

Thanks
And why wouldn't they put that on the package? Grrrr.

Answer:
I'm pretty sure three hours is the recommended "on" time to make them last the longest. They are not recommended for use in places where you flick the light on and off all the time. I think the rule of thumb is to turn them off if you're leaving the room for three minutes or more. Whereas with an incandescent bulb you should turn it off whenever you don't need it since it won't shorten its life... and since incandescent bulbs waste so much energy.

I've never heard that before, and I've been using compact flourescent bulbs for 11 years. I've never had a problem with turning them on right away.
if they burn out really fast like that you need to either not leave them on all the time or check the wattage on the appliance and bulb not all of them mix
how is leaving your light on for an hour going to train and inanimate object to last a long time?
lights are rated in hours they can burn.
if anything, your actions, would burn up an hour's worth of its use for no purpose whatsoever.
Another urban myth. Lightbulbs don't "LEARN".
You cant train your lightbulb to last a long time. Just make sure you dont have a 60 watt bulb somewhere that needs a 100 watt bulb, this will make it burn out faster. Just match your wattage and your bulbs should last a long time.
these so called Energy Saving bulbs are dangerous to the environment.. I would not use them. GE will be come very very rich
You should look at the package a little closer. You can not throw that light bulb away. It contains very dangerous levels of mercury and can not go in the trash. If happen to brake in your home you have to call Haz-mat. Those light bulbs are required to recycled through a certain place and in Colorado there is not 1 in whole state.
Energy saving bulbs burn out very quickly if they are installed in an adustable light fixture or light fixture with a dimmer.
