A thick wall of brick slowly absorbs heat during the day. It will take about 12 hours for the heat to "soak" through the brick from the outside surface to the inside. Thus not contributing to cooling demands of the builidng during the day. However, as soon as the sun goes down, that heat is just reaching the inside of the building. The heat radiates into the building at night, reducing heating costs. By placing a pane of insulating glass in front of the brick on the outside, you can force the heat stored up during the day to radiate mostly in one direction, towards the inside of the building, and very little is reflected back into outside space.
