Have you ever heard of FreeCycle.org?
has anyone used it?
Are there other on-line swap-meets like this one?
RE-USE / RECYCLE ---- this fits in so nicely with the concept :)
Answer:
oh yeah its a great place to post unwanted items or to pick up ones you need .i think about every town has one . but i feel like some miss use it ,on the one i use someone had posted they needed old coins .I think that's taking it a bit to far..but if you use it like it was meant its great. you can find baby clothes and furniture those type of things. And i think its great that no money exchanges hands ,but one thing to keep in mind don't meet the people picking up items at your home ,have them meet you at another busy location if you don't know them ,just for safety reasons .you get to pick whom you want your things to go to also so that helps most likely you will know them .but have fun and glad you discovered the sight keeps things out of land fills .
I just recently joined my local freecycle chapter and just think it's the coolest thing! Hope your local chapter is as giving (and entertaining)!
Yes, I use it all the time.
Freecycle is pretty cool. I have used it alot. Most things that get offered up usually go really fast so it can sometimes be frustrating. When I have offered things, as soon as it is posted I get a million emails. Be prepaired though, it's amazing how eager someone is to stake claim to whatever your offering and then they don't bother to come pick it up.
Yes I'm active in my freecycle group here. Most of the time though I find that a majority of the people are looking for a hand out. About half of the posts are from some person begging and many are just rude. Some even have the attitude that they are owed something. I've actually saw requests for cars, laptop computers (with demands for like new features) and enough lumber to build a small house. I don't mean to sound cold it's just there are other forums for that. I don't think that's the purpose of freecycle.
I found that site a couple of months ago it's neat there are actually 3 chapters near where i live so i joined all 3 I have posted a few things on there and they went really fast, I have never responded to a post yet though. there is another one that is supposed to be somthing like that its www.givetoothers.org but i havn't tried that one so i don't know what it is like.
I have been a member of freecycle for a few years now. It's good for a lot of things, but I have to admit there are things on there that really should be taken to the local landfill! One thing I have noticed about it is that it's always the same people who respond to things--like they are pack rats or something.
My sister tried to join her local freecycle chapter in Maine a few years back and she was appalled at some of the things that were being offered. (Condoms--I think they were used was one thing.)
Anyway, overall, it's a great concept and it's useful. I got a changing table off it and I've used it and used it. Saved me some money and frustration!
I've used it a couple of times, but I found when I offered something, some people were quite rude and offensive if they didn't receive the item or they would demand I bring it to them because they didn't want to waste their gas. Some people offereing things will also try to hit you up for money when you respond or try to barter with you. There's also a big problem with people using freecycle to dump their pets, so many groups have banned the offering fo animals.
In PA, there are FREECYCLE, FREESHARING, and RECYCLING Groups online on YAHOO Groups. It is also very easy to start one in your area if there is not one already set up.
We also have a PLANT EXCHANGE GROUP to recycle plants, seeds, pots, tools, etc.
And we also have a FREECYCLE CAFE just for comments, news, information one can share, etc.
I love this FREECYCLING idea, and it saves people money, time, and it saves our environment by reusing, redistributing, and recycling so our landfills are not filling up with items people can still use.
Look up www.freesharing.org too! Your area may have a group started, or start your own!
Here are a few facts I found on www.freecycle.com:
-Everyone in the U.S throws away enough aluminum every three months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet.
-The energy saved from recycling one aluminum can
will run your TV for 3 hours.
-Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates 1 job, land filling the same amount creates 6 jobs, recycling the same 10,000 tons creates 36 jobs.
I use the freecycle in Charlotte, North Carolina and the county I live in. I've gotten some really nice and needed items as well as given away many items. It beats going to the landfills. Most people are very polite. I think you'll really enjoy freecycling and you'll be helping the environment at the same time.
Good luck.

freecycle.org is amazing!! they have it in almost every city across the nation. I used to be a big "dumpster diver" because I believe "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Freecycle.org is the best way to implement this idea and decrease landfills.
yes, i use freecycle all the time its the coolest thing and you can find online freecycles in your area and there is also cheapcycle it is an online yard sale
I found out about the freecycle phenomenon a few months back and am hooked. My sentences now contain either "I got it off freecycle", "I can get rid of that easily on freecyle" or "have you heard of freecyle?" I am still amazed at how many people have never heard of this brilliant idea. Tell everyone - its great!!
I have been an active member of the freecycle yahoo group in my area and have found it to be a great way to keep things out of landfills and to help those in the community who are less fortunate. I have read the previous posts and would like to express one simple thing: there ARE rude people everywhere.
I have given away things such as an commercial pizza oven, a large dog cage, and am now offering two decent used tires that I especially saved to pass on after getting all new tires on my vehicle. I use freecycle as a way to help those less fortunate. I believe using freecycle is an awesome tool to help both the enviroment and my community.
It's all a matter of your outlook, I suppose.

I have heard of it, but also that your e mail address goes around the world. Would this give us more spam?? I would think so. How can they monitor it so illegal items arent being shipped around the world.
I think its better to join some of the local sites where your address does not get sent around the world. People in another country could arrange to even ship drugs under a pretentious item to another country.
Someone said they have a copyrite for the logo and the freecycle--they are supposed to display the copyrite #'s
The Freecycle started in Tucson, Arizona and is now in nearly every country.
I dont know too much about it other than what people have mentioned.
yeah!! just a couple of years later lol : ). just a brilliant idea.
My area of the Ozarks is fairly economically challenged and there is little in the way of "community closets." Decent thrift stores are few and far between, and of those, many can't seem to stay open for very long.
I'd known about Freecycle for a few years before moving from Florida. Upon arriving in Arkansas I checked for a local Freecycle group and found that there was none officially listed. Fulton County doesn't have that void any more! In just a little over a year our friendly group has grown to over 60 members. It's wonderful to be involved in an online community that provides such a vital regional resource.
Many, many others. Some groups use a web-based system rather than e-mail, some have different rules (allow swaps, or small price to be charged), and others just want to be local and independent of the controlling freecycle hierarchy.
There's a good page here that has a long list of such groups:
