I am very interested in conservation of not only the animal kingdom but also the plant kingdom. I am currently working on a science project regarding plant DNA barcoding in NY, U.S.A, however I am avid about becoming more involved in the Consortium for the Barcode of Life and Plant Working Group initiatives and goals. How can a person of my age and level become more involved in the preservation and conservation of biodiversity? What major steps and actions can or should I take? (I was inspired by a scientist in NY, as well as E.O. Wilson's interview on a channel 13 PBS program).
Answer:
You can register to begin with, but it not likely you will be asked to directly contribute until you are an accredited researcher. The Encyclopedia of Life is a comprehensive listing of all species ecosystem by ecosystem. The top scientists in each field haven't figured out all the complex relationships yet.
So there is plenty of work left to do but until you start your university studies it isn't likely your work would be accepted for publication.
You'll never know for sure 'til you ask though.

My first and most important suggestion is to go to college. You will need an education to do the things you want to do. That should be your primary focus.
