Why is Greenland so called when it is covered in ice?

Why was it warmer there centuries ago when there was no global warming panic.

Answer:
Julie, Bob and Iman are right, somebody I knew many years ago who tried to get me to move there (because of my technical skills were needed there in Iceland) told me the same story about Iceland/Greenland.

But you can't tell this to the Global Warming People, the only answer you get is:
ITS GLOBAL WARMING DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!!

Totally brainwashed by their great leader I would say.

They aren't even willing to investigate the cause of the higher temperatures in the last few years, for them
ITS GLOBAL WARMING DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!

Just like the earth was a flat disk many years ago.
Those were right all the time until it was proven not to be so.
Well the vikings named it that so that people who were chasing them would go to greenland and think that they were hiding there when they were actully in iceland which is green with trees and plant not covered in ice! lol
coz its shores had greens.. probably..
It was still mostly ice 300 years ago, with a little coastal land in summer, much as it is today.

Calling it "Greenland" was a scam by people who wanted to encourage other people to settle there. Some tried, and pretty rapidly gave up.
Centuries back when the vikings were dominating nothern Europe, many people were new to sailing unlike the deft vikings. For years no one knew where these raiders came from. The tricky vikings switched these ironic names on the maps of Greenland and Iceleand. Most people in seek of revenge would come to Greenland and freeze to death while the vikings would hide in the lushful greens of Iceland and Northen Norway safe from harm.
Due to plate tectonics, it has been moving North for millions of years!. The climate was warmer about 500 years ago, and I remember a programme on Discovery, discussing the way the Vikings colonised its southern coast. Partly buried people can be found there from the Viking landings. It seems the cold weather wiped them out, although disease has not been ruled out as to their decimation
I think you hit the nail on the head there. The earth goes through climatic changes, you can no sooner stop global warming than you can volcanoes erupting. People have been successfully brainwashed into thinking its our fault, when in actual fact, its a natural occurrence.
It was lush and green in the south when the Norsemen settled it a thousand years ago.

It is claimed there was then a warm period , believed to be caused by solar activity. We know from observing the sun that no such corresponding increase in solar activity is responsible for the warming that is happening now.

It is also possible that the Gulf Stream had a greater effect on Greenland at that time. We know the Gulf Stream moves about due to large amounts of ice melting. It is impossible to discover the full history of this.
