One, the Native Americans weren't the first ones on the planet. Two, they wouldn't have been the first to light a fire. So, in other words, NO. The air is smoggy because there is smoke and fog, mainly caused by factories and cars.

For the same reason that burning wood is environmentally unsound today, the practice of "smoke signals" also released a certain amount of creosote into the air. It is my understanding, however, that smoke signals were not practiced by very many native nations, and those that did did not practice enough to dramatically affect the environment.
There are two main factors associated with the vast air pollution in the LA area. The first is that LA is in a valley that prevents a great amount of natural air flow, which would typically blow away at least a portion of the pollution. The second reason is because LA is notorious for everyone driving everywhere -- public transportation (for whatever reason) is not a very popular option in the area, and so the barrage of exhaust fumes is greater than in most other places in the world, let alone the US. LA's pollution has very very little, if anything, to do with Native Americans. (Save those Native Americans today who drive their cars in LA.) :)
If smoke signals etc were to be the major Air Pollution cause,there would be ,many before them causing pollution .
The amount of smoke coming from one little signal fire would be a drop in the ocean compared to the chimney smoke all over Europe at the time. There was a lot more burning going on in Europe when the Natives were the only people in America.
And as far as the smog in L.A. is concerned, yes that's kind of it. The bowl shape of the landscape stops wind from blowing in, but also, because of that bowl of hot air in the valley, the cooler air from the mountains around L.A. tries to sink into the valley and causes a blockade of sinking cooler air that prevents the warmer air from rising. The light warm air cannot penetrate the dense cool air blanket above the city.

But then who could have foreseen the exstend of humanity that was to follow
Native Americans in their culture ,religion and everyday life (at least in the past)are probably the most Environmentally aware people around.

So when speaking about the Environment we can learn something from Native Americans

So think twice next time when attacking Indians and their behaviour towards Nature
Well basic fire exists in the world naturally, and things they may have left behind if they moved camp was pretty natural still and would likely have little problem returning to nature...so no.
The first polluters were the first burners of things that usually wouldn't be burned on this planet and the first to littler with things that did not biodegrade well.
