Does anyone else take RE-USABLE BAGS with them when SHOPPING?
Answer:
Well done! Now you need to spread the word to your nearest and dearest!
Here in Ireland they levied a 15c tax on the plastic carrier bags that get given away when you do your shopping. The effect was immediate - I reckon 95% of people turned to re-usable bags. And although that has slackened a bit, nearly everyone takes bags with them when they go shopping. It is brilliant!
In GB, on the other hand, or the US, when I visit, it's heartbreaking to see countless carrier bags thoughtlessly being used. When I was younger and plastic bags first came in, they were quite strong and you would be asked if you wanted one and then charged, I don't know - 15p (back in 1980-ish) and you only got one if you really needed it.
I think it should be like that now, and Ireland has done really well on this.
Yes, whenever I go to the supermarket I bring a big tote bag, an Ikea Big Blue Bag, and a smaller canvas bag. These will hold all my groceries for the week and I don't have to waste the paper or plastic bags.
The plastic bags can't even be recycled unless there's a specific program for it like California just enacted:

And paper bags require more energy to produce and trees to be cut down, although at least they can be recycled. There's no reason not to bring one's own reuseable bags though!
No, but do re-use them around the house.
I don't I only go once a month so have to to much for that. I think its a really good thing your doing and wish more people would join you ..that's how its done a little at a time.
When I shop at Aldi's I use bags from home. I also use them to pick up the presents in the back yard that the dogs leave :). I'm glad you are staying with this room!! Have a good day.
I also use reusable bags when I go shopping. As a matter of fact, I finally got my FunQA.coms Tote Bag in the mail yesterday (finally!)! My sister just got her tote bag last week too! For women, you can usually just roll it up and throw it into your purse or men just stick it in your back pocket and put it in your basket when you get to the store. I always hated having my kitchen full of paper/plastic bags and I didn't want to just throw them away, but they've been like a lifetime supply of garbage bags and I still manage to end up with a few more coming in now and then.
yes they are great
i do and if i forget i reuse the bags they give me or take them back:
Thank you Yahoo for my nice new super big roomy Green Bag!
Yes, I do.
Yes I do.
Sometimes, when you take your own poly bags into Tesco they give you green points on your clubcard. This is then added onto your total, so you end up with more shopping and money vouchers.
Oh, I always do...I even take them with me to the mall, the hardware store and other places. They actually hold more, are easier to carry, and. most stores will even give you a 5ยข per bag refund for bringing your own :)
Yes, I keep one in my handbag and always use it.
yes!! i usually take 3 canvas bags and everything fits perfectly. its great, i wish everyone brought their own bags! even re-using old plastic bags is good!
Yep, I do. I realized I have tons of little canvas bags that are the perfect size. And they fold up so easily so I have a few tucked away at work, and some at home.
We have a grocery store the name is Save Allot and i do most of my shopping there and you do save allot because they don't bag your items they put them back in the cart then you take it to a table and use the boxes the merchandise came in for the store. Those are free and most people use them or you can buy a reusable heavy duty bag from them or bring your own bag and you do save allot just for simple things like not supplying you with a bag. For instance a can of tuna 95 cents in any other grocery store but Save Allots is 45 cents for the same size and brand. big savings on environment and the wallet
i'm happy you do that
i dont because i use the bags as trash bags, you know to line my trash can with...but i'm going to start soon ;)
I shop a lot at a store called aldis and either you bring your own or but them each time. I bring my own and when they wear oout I recycle at a different store and but some new ones.
No really never thought much about it but it was interesting to hear in Ireland they charge 15 cents. When I go to Aldi's I buy bags and reuse them for everything they are so nice and heavy.additionally when I go to Price Rite I buy the bags but usually throw them out they are so flimsy...but next time I will bring canvas.never thought about it.when I get FREE bags from Price Chopper or Wal-Mart I bring them home and use them to do a million things with...garbage liners, lunch CARRIERS, ROLLER CARRIERS, all sorts of things ...Oh and save tons for when I have garage sales...so others can have them...where do you get those Yahoo Green Bags..love to have one.or three...!! I would have to buy canvas bags unless someone knows where you can get them free..
I would love to save a tree but I don't know if people really do or use the wood for something else...I know many times they don't replant which is sad...now that International Paper sold tons of acreage in the Adirondacks what do you think will be done with it? Do you think private owners will be mandated to replant?
Don't have much of a choice. Most of the stores I go to don't even have plastic or paper bags.
I just got my yahoo bag, so i will start using it everytime i go to the market. I also have a bag from Santa Fe Trail that is made of recyclabe plastic and is really great.
We do! We just leave them in the backseat of the car so they are always with us. When we bring them in the house and empty them, my husband takes them back to the car right away. We'll be ready for our next shopping trip!
Yes I do. I take them everywhere and if I forget them then I just stuff items into my purse and load everything into my car without bags. It is a lot of work but that is what I get for not taken my bags with me. My mom started me on the canvas bag thing back in 1990. I can't believe that people were not and are still not doing it.
San Francisco has banned all plastic bags and I am hoping that will catch on to other places. IKEA now charges you for plastic bags. Good for them.
If you are a coffee drinker you should invest in a thermas that is 16 oz so that you are not using a cup everyday. Little things make a difference and most places give you a discount.
always
