How can a new process to replace the F/T process be developed in the world of today?

Answer:
FT processes are in very limited use because they're cost prohibitive, their primary use being in the production of synthetic gasoline products although any hydrocarbons can be produced.

GHG emissions of FT processes are approx double that of conventional extraction methods and a much cleaner, carbon neutral alternative is biomass gasification. A natural possibility that could be artificially enhanced is that of abiogenic production of certain hydrocarbons - primarily the gases such as methane; abiogenic petroleum origin is something that has been speculated but is not widely accepted.
