What are your views on what Physicist Stephen Hawking had to say about the survival of the human race?
Mr. Hawking says that It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survial of the species. He believes there is an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the earth { Global warming, Nuclear war, A genetically engineered virus.}

I myself believe that moving out into space wouldn't hurt. What with over population and being taking out by an astroid.
Agree that it is going to take alot of work. So we better get started.

It sounds nice in theory but I don't know that it can actually be done. What about growing crops and such? However, Hawking is heralded as a genius, so maybe he's right.
But even if we KNEW an end to the earth was imminent, how would it be determined as to who would go on to repopulate the species in another established area?
Only the rich? Only the very intelligent? Only the beautiful? In the whole scheme of this, I think whatever happens will be God's plan and man won't be able to undermine it. Perhaps global warming or being hit and destroyed by a meteor will be our Armageddon. I'm not a Bible 'thumper', but this has been thought to be the end of 'life as we know it'.
I think this is the link that you meant.

It certainly makes sense out of the perspective that a catastrophy can happen, however unlikely. There are significant trouble with travelling to another star, or even setting up a moon base. Here is some more info:

I think it was a little dramatic but worth thinking about. We really need to solve our own problems first before we try to branch out or we'll end up destroying our new homes like we are this one. We need to understand that engineering viruses is not a good idea and the environment is to be taken care of and not abused. If we could solve the problems we have now, we would only have to worry about some huge asteriod hitting the planet. It's a good idea to branch out and populate other planets because staying on earth is like putting all your eggs in one basket. But we really do need to solve our other problems now so we don't encounter them in the future.
It's a nice idea in theory but in reality the same tendencies that would cause us to destroy ourselves here on earth would follow us into outer space and any other planet we might inhabit and develop our race on.
Humans think of themselves as being all important, but are we really? The universe will continue and cockroaches will survive long past our demise, whenever it might be.
