Reading facial expressions?

What does it mean if someone smiles like this;
tight lips, straight smile but small not wide smile, looking straight forward, eyes wide open, they stare at you like this for a few seconds then return to what they are doing.

What is going on in their head? What is their attitude to you? What would be your reaction?

Answer:
the person is surprised about ur action. shocked u of all people is doing such a thing.

has either lost respect for u or gain much respect for u.

think of what u are doing first, be it good or bad.

i think its frustration... look at the context
thinking 'wow. you're lame.' or 'oh my god. why are you staring at me'
They've acknowledged you and gone back to what they are doing. Basically.
Depending on the context, and if it is male or female,

the positive; they are giving you an acknowledgment, would need to no more about eyebrow movement to pinpoint if this is a slightly sarcastic acknowledgement or not.

the negative; they pity you and feel empathy for you
You don't matter much to them, they see you with unseeing eye and smile mechanically means they don't want to appear rude at the same time. The work at hand demands more concentration than you...I would let them alone.
They've examined you, are not satisfied with what they see, and then go back to whatever their doing.
p.s. you are the one who answered my song question with "nope, no clue, dear!" you dis- GUST me!

He has gone momentarily insane; this medical phenomenon is commonly associated with brain hemorrhaging.

Is he by any chance a psychopathic killer?
Do you have Asperger Syndrome? I do, so I understand your confusion. I personally think its sarcastic, like whatever you say, etc..

But I'm Asperger, so I might be wrong here.
they're just taking a break from their own thoughts, not truly interested in the person they're smiling to. i wouldn't take it personally.

my response to them would depend on what i would be doing and thinking at the time. most of teh time that's just to ignore them
