Can you admire that which you do not also respect?
Answer:
I find it hard, but often do so grudgingly. Respect is a far greater issue, everything deserves respect, whether that means caution or awe and adulation. You have to admire abysmal ignorance for its sheer audacity, while it is something one hopefully would never emulate. I walk around the piles in the park, in this respect I respect them, but don't admire them. It's not that way with dogs, they seem to have to smell each one and maybe taste a few, showing great admiration in the whole process. Some people are like that with opinions and idols, only the dog is better because it is acting only according to the nature of its species.
No, to admire something would also involve gaining my respect.
not at all, i can admire someone for their audacity or determination while still having no respect for their beliefs or actions, like a religious group, i can admire the way they face adversity even if i think they are all wrong but i do not have to respect them for it.
I could not admire anything I don't respect.
Oh I can admire something that I don't respect. It irritates me that I can but I don't consider that the two HAVE to be linked. Usually I respect things that I admire. Human nature, as it is much more comfortable for me that way.
There was this person I had total admiration for but then I found out many things about them...their actions and what they are really about ...it took a year and now i can't admire the same way because I lost all respect for them...I can only admire someone I respect even in the business world I work if I have no respect for my boss I can not continue to work for him or her and in the past I cut those relations.all for the best for me in the end. I think respect is so important if there is no repsect there can be no admiration for someone how could there be .
Respect, & its synonyms, refers to an admiring attitude, or to courteous treatment. Respect suggests almost an awed admiration for a person's views, accomplishment, or behaviour. A feeling for one's equal as in a real RESPECT for one's opponent's intelligence. In essence, we respect the qualities with which we agree, approve, & are within the boundaries of our moral compass. I cannot fathom how it would be possible to admire what I don't respect. I ADMIRE this guy for his facility to go into someone's home & shoot all of them, & get away with it? I ADMIRE the perseverance & dedication of the person who wipes out terrioists, (& civilians at the same time)? I may be shocked, or awed (!) by the things people get away with, but would never admire them. No, they are not inseperable.
NO. oxymoron.
No.
unless one is schizophrenic or amnesiac.
At first my answer was going to be a resounding NO. Then I thought about Jude Law. I totally admire him (um...his physique), but I don't respect him. So yes, you CAN admire that which you do not also respect.
They mean the same thing.
"Respect-- to show or feel admiration or high regard for someone or something. Example: He respected his grandfather."
"Admire-- to regard with respect or approval."
