How can I keep myself from having weird dreams that do not make sense?

I keep having dreams that do not make sense and they bounce around from topic to topic and continually wake me up. How can I make this stop? I want this to stop because I am not able to get a decent night sleep and I have been so tired lately.

Answer:
Don't resist. Go with the dreams; they're trying to help you sort out stuff. If you persist in avoiding dreams (issues, really), there will be a heap of unresolved stuff on your mind all the time, and you'll never find peace.
Why don't you try ANALYZING them? There's obviously some deeper issue that your subconscious is trying to bring to your attention. Decipher your dreams, figure out the problem, deal with it, and be at peace.
just try to think of happy things
do anything to become a true christian!!! it is the best answer out there or find a christian and get them to pray for you
wish you luck
You remember your dreams when you dont sleep deeply. Its not your dreams waking you up... we all have wierd dreams, but yours wake you up because youre barely asleep. There is something in your life troubling you. School? Love? Work? Something needs to be dealt with. Deal with it and you'll start sleeping better.
Thinking about dreams will make you dream more, also, I agree with the person who said you are barely asleep so you are remembering more dreams. I usually remember the dream I have in the morning before I wake up, but I'm sure it's not the only dream I had all night!
You should research how to get a better nights sleep. Do you have a ritual that you always do before bed? My husband is so amazed that I fall asleep so quickly and so deeply, but I spend 45 min to an hour getting ready for bed. My mind and body know it's BEDTIME! (I also look forward to sleeping, that probably helps.) And I usually silently pray myself to sleep since I am a Christian. My personal prayers then the Lord's prayer over and over, I usually fade away before I've said it 2 or 3 times.
Anyway, do the same things before bed all the time. Don't worry about tomorrow. There's lots of things, research it and pick what works for you.
During college, I started having lots of nightmares, really awful. A friend gave me a cross necklace and I prayed over it and really believed it could keep the nightmares away. And IT DID. I think Jesus helped me and also my belief in the protection helped me to not be so scared.
Praying for others really does help, so I shall pray for you to sleep well and to get more good advice/help, also.
Live well and do good.
Before somebody tells you you are having manic-like flights of ideas or racing thoughts and need to see a psychiatrist...

Real basic stuff here: Are you drinking an abundance of caffienated beverages? are you a smoker (nicotine high)? Are you taking drugs of any kind that might enhance nervousness or anxiety? Many people overlook the effect smoking or drinking even one cup of coffee per day (often at a bad hour) will have to hamper a good nights sleep.

However, based one how you worded your question, it sounds like part of your problem is your interpretation of your own experience. You want the thoughts you have while sleeping to "stop," but you might be asking for a little too much. It may be true that dreams can be "analyzed" either from a Freudian or neo-Freudian or other perspective, but don't forget Freud himself said sometimes a dream is just a dream. The nature of dreaming itself generally has a quality of images flashing or "bouncing" as you say in your head, and there may be no way to control this except for changing your understanding of what to expect from going to sleep and dreaming. To quote a song by the Eagles: Don't let your own wheels make you crazy. There's little if anything at all you can do to make yourself stop dreaming.

Dreams occur for the most part when you are not in a deep stage of sleep, and you might not be able to achieve a deep sleep because you're not getting enough physical exercise during the day, which is so common in American culture. You may also be too stressed and unable to deal with whatever is going on in your life at the moment, which requires you focus on the foundation of the problem more and not so much the symptom of not being able to sleep.

If you're not doing stimulant drugs, not stressed out with conflicts, not under-exercised, no other problems, and you just can't deal with the dreaming as you indicate above, then you're being unrealistic about what to expect from sleep.
Why don't you have your dreams read so that you can learn what it is that your dreams are trying to tell you? Much of the language of dreams is different than you would think, logically, so it helps to have someone who understands the language assist you in understanding the dreams. I'm sure much of the bouncing back and forth in the dreams has something to do with your personal experiences of late and your daily stressors; emotional worries, life's difficulties, etc. Your dreams may be trying to summerize your feelings about these various experiences, but for some reason, they are bouncing all around, making it difficult for you to go through your sleep cycles properly, which prevents you from getting the rest that your mind & body needs during sleep. There are all kinds of things that can keep us from getting a good night's sleep and can cause our dreams to appear to go haywire- Fear and Stress are usually the biggies! I would be happy to help. My link is listed below. The sooner that you can find out what is preventing you from restful sleep, the sooner you will be able to experience smooth dream cycles and your dreams will calm down. I wish you a smooth night's sleep and sweet dreams!
