Fear of driving?

My only sibling died in a drunk driving accident. It happened when I was 6 years old. To this day, I am terrified to drive. Even though I have been to college and have a cool job, in some ways not driving is a disadvantage. I have been to a therapist, but she could not help me overcome my fear. Has anyone been through this? Does anyone have any helpful insight? Please don't be unkind. Thanks.

Answer:
I'm sorry you lost your sibling. Sometimes, terrible things happen. Try taking this event and learning a lesson from it, namely, don't drink and drive! (Not saying that you would, but you can teach that to your friends or something.) Do you think your sibling would want you to lead a restrictive life? I doubt it. You're missing out on a lot by depending upon other people for your transportation.

Why don't you read the manual and take the learner's permit test? Then get with a trusted friend and take driving in baby steps. For example, day one, turn on the car. Lesson done. Day two, turn on the car, put your foot on the brakes and put it in "drive," then return it to "park," take your foot off the brakes and turn the car off. Lesson done. Next time, pull forward 6 feet. Next time, pull forward 12 feet. You get the idea. You can take it as slowly as you want to; even if it takes you two years to learn to drive, you can be proud of yourself--and maybe you can become the "designated driver" as a service to your friends and an honor to your sibling's memory.

Good luck to you!
With the way a lot of people drive this is understandable. I am not sure what kind of area you live in like in the city. Have you ever driven before? If not then have someone take you to an open area like a huge parking lot when there is not traffic and get use to the breaking and steering first. After that then try out on some open road with minimal traffice. Then just gradually progress at your comfort level. Practice passing people. One key to remember is when you pass someone before you change lanes you should be able to see the headlights in your rearview mirror of the person whom you are going to get in front of. If you cannot then you know that you do not have enough room. When you change lanes always look over your shoulder and out the window of the side you are going to move over. This is called a blind spot. Some people think that you are completely covered by your mirrors. This is not so. You blind spot is small but there could be someone there. Just please do not use a cell phone, put on make up, comb your hair while you are driving. You need to have your full attention to what is going on around you.
I would probably try hypnosis; that's what I plan to do to overcome a fear of flying. Luckily, though, it's a lot easier to avoid flying than driving. Good luck! :)
After driving with a flawless record for 23 years, I developed a fear of driving, because I moved to another country where they're maniacs on the road, there are no road rules [a red light is a suggestion], & they drive on the opposite side to what I'm used to.
Sometimes it's a disadvantage, but I sat down one day & worked out that there are actually more advantages to NOT driving.
1. You save heaps of money: registration, insurance, road taxes, mechanical repairs, maintenance, petrol, oil, etc.
2. You exercise more: you tend to walk or ride a bike more than what you would if you had the convenience of a car.
3. Public transport fees are cheap.
4. Friends with cars are friends indeed.
5. You can drink whenever you want & not get busted for DUI
6. Consider all the things you can freely do as a passenger: You can sightsee, sleep, read, change your clothes, write, use a laptop, eat, drink, use the phone, or masturbate!
7. You don't have to take your turn as the "designated driver" with your friends.
8. If you're ever involved in a prang, it won't be your fault.

Not every fear needs to be "solved". Why not just accept it, and rejoice in the advantages?
