Why does a difference of religious opinion generate so much hate?

Why do people feel uncomfortable around those who don't share their same religious or political beliefs?

Answer:
I think people see the people with different beliefs as wrong, and it so incredibly annoying when a dude is wrong about something but insists he is right, that's why I think it brings up all that hate.
Because religion is a system of values not one of knowledge.
People are way more invested in their values than their knowledge.
I believe its because some people feel so strongly about their religion that they can not relate to someone that thinks thier religion is false.
Cuz everyone wants to think they're the one who's right.
I think, a dangerously high level of intolerance in our societies compounded with hollowness of our ethical commitment generates it.
UPBRINGING!! If your parents and family teach you to hate people of opposing religions then that is probably what you will do!
Not everyone who has different opinions about religion and politics hate eachother. I think France has the right idea in not allowing public displays of belief in public places. This is they key to stoping out religious hate crimes etc. Unfortunately even the way we choose to dress can be an outward display of what our beliefs are, you only have to look at the EMO movement to see that. We are all victims of fashion, religious control, governments and political agenda.
What we need is for a global initiative to educate all people on being accepting and understanding of eachother.
It can only generate hate from those who choose to go there.
Fear and insecurity is usually their reason, and perhaps their lack of knowledge.

As to your second question: I believe they feel out of their comfort zone, and again, their fears and insecurities rise to the top.
Fear
because religion / faith is a big part of many people's lives and they feel threatened when it is questioned.
Some of the problem is generated by social and family "conditioning". The church and the family tell the children from birth, that there is no other way to think but "their" way. The child eventually develops a belief pattern that coincides with those teachings. The child then believes that everyone else is wrong but them. This belief system generates an attitude toward others of various beliefs that they are wrong. There isn't much you can do about those who have been "conditioned", except feel sorry that their thinking is so limited and get on with your own life.
