I have to give a wedding speech and am so nervous, help !?
I have to fly to Europe next week and I would rather the plane crashes than give the speech. What can I take Valium or some other drug to help calm me ? Every time I think about it I start shaking. I have dreaded this for the last 10 years.
Answer:
My wedding was in Europe as well. The following is some advice I gave to the best man at my wedding, and a friend at a different wedding.. They both ended up giving amazing, personable speeches...
Do not write out the entire speech... This is a big mistake most people make...Speech writing is for Politicians... You are not giving a speech, but speaking to friends and family. Create an outline- I wrote down the names I wanted to thank, then a few topics for stories on back of a business card. If you list the topics you want to speak about, then you are truly just speaking to everyone like everday...
If you wrote down and rehersed your speech, then you would focus on trying to remember it, then you would try not to mess up, and if you did, you would get flustered. Do you see the domino effect of writing a speech and rehersing it? Just express yourself at the moment in time without trying to remember the words.. You will seem more natural and be able to look at the crowd.. If you are really nervous, wait until after the speech to eat, and don't have more than 2 drinks...
An example of a topic list(this will force you to paraphrase and speak naturally to everyone without being nervous about remembering lines):
Thank:
Ushers- Joke about friend at Bachelor party
Bridesmaids- comment how beautiful
Parents- Last but not least
Brief comical Story of how we met
Thank everyone for coming- relax, enjoy, have a drink...
Good luck..
Write your speech out and practice everyday first by yourself and then with someone that you trust. It will make it easier for you to know what to say when you are up there speaking. Don't get yourself drunk before going up there, I have seen people do this and it is so tacky and you will come out if they are video taping it looking foolish. Also don't do the valium, chances are that you will drink to toast and that could really make the moment unforgettable for you and the guest. You are going to be fine, just write down what it is about the bride that you love and why you believe that they are going to be a happy couple. After writing it, which should be the length of an essay about a three minute or less speech, read it everyday and do it outloud not in your head. I know giving a speech in front of people is nerve wracking but you would be surprised that once you get started and are prepared you will do better than what you imagine yourself. Pace yourself and practice, practice, practice.
