Why do you think Freud has had such a lasting impact on our culture?
Answer:
Freud gets a bad rap because many of his theories aren't supported by modern research (such as the Electra complex). However, there is a reason why he is considered the father of modern psychiatry. He was a groundbreaking pioneer in so many ways.
He wasn't the first, but he was the most influential in his theories that 1) sexuality affects your mood, 2) childhood experiences influence the development of your personality, and 3) we all have underlying impulses and thoughts which we're not fully aware of.
Later pioneers in psychotherapy such as Jung, Skinner, Rogers, Ellis and Beck strongly disagree with many of the details of Freudian theory, and yet they all were trained in Psychodynamic psychotherapy (Freud's therapy), and all contemporary theories are clearly products of those first steps taken by Freud in the early 20th century.
You wouldn't criticize Ford because the Model T wasn't as fast and the 2008 Mustang. If it wasn't for the Model T, there wouldn't have been a Mustang.
Who the hell is Freud. If its from a question from a textbook, at least give the name of textbook, company, and page.
Well, he made some very deep and insightful analyses into the human psyche, and because of that, psychologists even today learn from his teachings.
Because he was so horny that its amusing. All of his theories are sex related.
