Can you become a psychologist if you have a criminal record including a few assaults in self defence but still
I am looking to study psychology at glasgow university in scotland.I have no drug convictions
Answer:
If it was claimed as SELF DEFENCE you would not surely have a criminal record... Or am i missing something here?
Phone the uni and ask to speak to someone in the psychology department. I'm sure they will help you as much as they can. It will depend on when the convictions were and how serious they were. Ask it can't harm.
Good luck
YEAH I AGREE WITH THE 1ST DUDE. NO I DOUBT IT. I WORK IN CONJUCTION WITH DISCLOSURE SCOTLAND.
With todays equal opportunity and anti discrimination legislation, prospective employers will certainly listen to your side of the story. It just gets a bit trickier when there are crimes against the person. Hopefully these incidents were quite a while ago, and we've all done things in the past that need to be left in the past. I'd certainly declare the convictions as soon as possible in the selection process, explaining the circumstances. Good luck to you.
Well surely if ex druggies can become counsellors, then I dont see why not! If you can show that you your experiences can give you an insight into peoples psyche, that you have learnt from your mistakes etc then you should be ok
I would thing that you would never be employed by the NHS, even if the assaults were in self defence and you also appear to say you have other criminal convictions. I would say you would have no chance. You may be able to set up privately but as for being employed by someone they should check you out before employing you. The best place to ask is the institute of psychology or what ever it's called. No good wasting your time studying to then be unemployable.
I would imagine that anyone working with vulnerable people and confidential information would be subject to Disclosure Scotland clearance which is a criminal records check. You would probably be able to study psychology but in terms of gaining a position these convictions would probably hold you back. The best thing to do would be to contact the department at Glasgow Uni directly and ask to speak confidentially to someone there about this before commencing the course. If you have convictions for a violent crime like assault then I think it is unlikely that you could get a job as a psychologist. Sorry.
Firstly, check with the British Psychological Society. Secondly, I think u will be OK as long as ur convictions are from a long time ago and u can show/prove that u have changed. I too have a criminal record (although not assault) and i am studying psychology at caledonian. I have been able to work with the vulnerable ie the elderly and children although i have been rigorously interviewed and questioned on my past and in some cases have found that my past experiences were an asset on the other hand I'm quite sure i have not got some jobs becos of my past. The best advice i can give u is that u get comfortable and honest talking about what happened and show that u take responsibility for what happened. The times i never got the jobs, i feel, was becos i wasnt comfortable talking about my convictions ect and it showed, this i think put doubts in their minds- remember ur going to be interveiwed by many people at 1 time and they do not give u an easy time of it! good luck and all the best for the future!
A criminal record will not stop you getting into a degree course. But it will affect your chances of professional employment.
To become a chartered practising psychologist you must be eligible to register with a professional body and this record will prevent that happening.
These laws are in place for a good reason to protect children and vulnerable adults from abusive people.
Although, why not consider counselling, its a well paid, highly satisfying job. You would be welcomed in this area talking to indivduals and groups from an angle of personal experience.
some people are stupid - the guy just wants an answer to his question not a bloody moral debate with you judgemental idiots who dont know a sthing about this guys life.
anyway.... Im convinced that getting into psychology would rewuire a CRB check, and that means even if youre convictions are 'spent' under the rehabilitation of offenders act, these will still show up to a future employer - so this is a problem.
My advice would be to find out exactly what youre record shows by going to the police station and aquiring the form that tells you EXACTLy whats on youre record, and than once you know precisely what offences, dates, etc. you can go from there. You could ask the admissions people at the uni. or perhaps find out what requirements are needed to be rigistered in the British Psychological Society.. even better, contact the BPS themselves and put this question to ythem.
I am going through a CRB check myself with some previous so know a little. Also I rang up a organisation called 'NACRO' they are concerned with rehabilitating offenders (nopt saying you need rehabilitation) but their helpline can give you some info on youre criminal record and tells you the technicalities of how the legal system works, for example the seriousness of an assualt, has got nothing to do with what you actually did, but on what punishment you received (something I didnt know till they told me) their number is 02078406464
to summarise, my advice would be to ask the UNI, ask the BPS and NACRO, and to get the specific details of offences off the pigs ;p
Also, FunQA.com is proababely not the best place to get serious answers, as most people are here just to pass time and mess about it seems (i myself am one, but its wrong to mess with peoples lives)
GOOD luck my friend.
