Wanting to learn about psychology?
Answer:
Psychology in high school is all baby milk and outdated bologna theories. Sometimes the same can be said for psych BA degrees at school. Though if it's a career you want it's a necessary tedium. My favorite field in psych is evolutionary psychology. This is my favorite book in that field.
Steven Pinker, How the Mind Works
I bought mine at half price books.
travel into the mind. You will find everything there is to know there first hand.
There are books that can guide you but do not let them limit you from the possibilities of the amazing thing we take for granted, called life.
There are books written by famous psychologist.
Even people you hear about and see on tv have things to teach you, like Dr Phil and Dr. Drew.
But also people like musicians, actors, artists.
You could Google psychology books and find good deals on half.com or amazon.com, or your favorite sites.
I would also recommend religion because it deals greatly with belief, which is a psychologists main focal point for changing a person's behavior.
No not all people are religious, but ALL people have beliefs about life. (and most of them are simply afraid of death).
Psychology today is a good sourced magazine to start with. Also Harvard mental health weekly is good. You can take a class like social science once you reach high school. I'm not too sure what other classes they may offer, as I have not been in high school for many year. lol.. speak with a school counselor to help you figure out what classes can be taken in regards to psychology..
Good-luck in your search of the mind
If you are very interested in psychology (as I was) then there are many books that can help you. If you wish to take classes in high school, you will want to talk to your guidance counsellor, who will know what programs are available to you.
For basic books, you might try reading about Dr. Sigmund Freud, Dr. Skinner, Dr. Pavlov, & Dr. Maslow. These are the grandfathers of modern psychological practices today (a lot of which you may find somewhat dull). Don't worry too much about all the details, but try to understand the processes that they used...
well i could tell u what i got in return-
description: Psychology majors study human and animal behavior and explore the processes involved in normal and abnormal thoughts' feelings, actions. Student's increase their understanding of behavior while learning psychological facts, methods, principles, and generalizations about individuals and groups.
associated skills: Oral and written communication, critical thinking
recommended high school courses: English 4, precollege mathematics, biology 2, history or social studies 2, foreign language 3, and computer science 1
this is what i got for my results from the PSAT, i choose psychology as the major i wanted to study
don't know if it'll help much but there u go
good luck and let me know the outcome or what u guys think
later :)

Ok well what i recommend are these magazines...Discover Presents (they usually have something psychological, very nice^_^) Scientific American (may have psychological information) and a magazine i believe is called Psychology. (look it up in www.bn.com)
Now another book i would recommend that almost all psychologist/psychiatrist follow is the DSM IV. And a famous psychologist C.G Jung, but overall you have the Internet to your advantage so have fun and good luck to you both...
Which by the way i too want to major in psychology, so good choice^_^
I really cannot believe some of these answers.
Dr. Drew and Dr. Phil? Wow, if anyone watches that to learn about psychology, I just dont even know what to say
I do advise reading up about some of the classics as others have mentioned- Pavlov, Skinner, Jung, Freud, Rogers, etc. But its also important to remember that psychology has come a long way since those folks. Its also essential that you look up what is going on today in psychology, current trends, issues, research, etc.
Whoever said you should read the DSM-IV has obviously never even opened the thing up- they just searched for it on wikipedia. It reads like a dictionary (its a reference book), and you will be in college before you finish reading the thing. It also costs around $100
As for looking up books on Amazon or google, most likely what you will get then is "pop psychology" books. "Pop psychology" is the stuff thats being talked about a lot today, usually with little or very weakly supported empirical research. The books are usually watered down to sell better to the general public, and make almost no contribution to the field (same with Dr. Phil).
I would suggest, as others have, reading some magazines. Nature is one of the best, but there are also some others. I would also HIGHLY advise going to the APA (American Psychological Association) website- its full of resources for practitioners and students. Also, as this is the most repected professional organization for Psychologists, the information you get will be helpful and accurate (Not Dr. Phil junk or "pop psychology"). You could also go the websites of some universities and search for the psychology departments homepage.
As for courses, take whatever social science courses you can in addition to what you must take already, a lot of times you dont have a whole lot of freedom in high school for electives. Any psychology or sociology course is a great start.
Good luck, and please, dont watch Dr. Phil or attempt to read the DSM-IV
