well it's not as bad as it looks on tv, but sororities and fraternities do have some pretty gruesome initiations.
i wish.
College fraternities have been around for a long time, and most of them indulge in hazing of some kind. The hazing may be silly, or a little dangerous (like drinking contests), or can be worse. This is equally true of colleges in Europe by the way.
As for the movies, believe about 1/8 of what you see, unless the movie specifically states that it is based on a true story, and even then it might not be accurate.
