If humans had no sense of taste or smell would they eat as much?

Would there be less obese people in the world? Would we be healthier?

Answer:
It's a toss up how much it would help, although I agree it would help a good deal (maybe cure 35-40% of all cravings).I've heard 3/4 of taste is in fact do to smell...
.yet the other side of food having to do with neither taste nor smell is it boosts endorphins AKA feel good hormones.

Therefore it gives you a high and lack of taste won't stop the sense of hunger or the fact people with bad eating habits' bodies run less efficiently and thus crave more food to keep from feeling hungry.

There would be less obese people if smell and taste were mostly eliminated...yet drugs to emulate the aforementioned pleasurable sensations of food would also be needed to fully defeat the cravings.
I believe finding a way to give people the startling realization that hard exercise creates more Endorphins than even the most insane eating habits would also help (though usually if they have the guts to push themselves that hard in the first place, they won't be obese for long at all).
yes, i think we would be healthier
No, not healthier as there would be a lot of underweight people instead. The only exception would probably be people with thyroid problems and such. I enjoy having more than a growling stomach as motivation to eat.
YES WAY!
I get hungry when smelling food.
And I wouldn't crave sweet things
because I couldn't taste it's sugar goodness.
we would be healther and i think we would eat less as it would not taste so good

Thanks,
Stuart

Of course because people would eat to live and not eat for pleasure. Some obese people live to eat and no sense of taste or smell would eliminate this.
We probably wouldn't eat as much and I don't know that we would eat healthier. I love to eat healthy but can't afford it. I can go to burger king eat off the dollar menu for $3 there is no way I can make a healthy lunch for $3
Yes we'd all be eating perfectly and just the right amount.
Unlike the Pringles and french onion dip I'm hoggin' down right now.
Probably not we would not bother with it as much because we might just eat enough to survive... Like oxygen we cant taste or smell it so we only think of it as a resource to live.
yeah but then again they might eat sumthing that is bad or rotten
Not, because smells open the hungry, if you don“t smell the food, is not attractive.
well if you think about it that is exactly why there are so many unhealthy, obese ppl out there nowadays...its as if they have no taste buds, they're not enjoying or 'feeling' what they're eating, nor are they listening to their bodies.so they keep eating and eating, being too distracted by the tv or internet or whatever and not knowing when their bodies are even full. if people actually sat down at the table, and actually tasted the food they're eating, they'd be alot healthier
humans are on this earth who have no sense of taste and smell...and yes they eat just as much and can be over weight.
My sister cannot smell.which is very dangerous in case of fire etc.---and she is over weight
My aunt has never been able to smell or taste.

you just know when you ar hungry...this is a differenct function than taste or smell...has nothing to do with your hunger (appetite) control.

so NO there would not be is is NOT fewer obese persons in the world.

you could read a anatomy & phys. book...it will explain it.

good luck
Humans may not even exist anymore. There's a reason eating tastes good and sex feels good.
They'll die. They need to eat
I've wondered about that, too, because I read somewhere that your sense of smell is a big part of the eating experience. I thought - wow, if I couldn't smell, maybe I'd lose weight. But, some people (and I'm part of that group, unfortunately) eat out of boredom - and I don't think lack of smell would make any difference then. It would be interesting to test, though...maybe some pharmaceutical company should come up with a drug that inhibits your sense of smell and see if it helps with weight loss!
Don't you think that eating is more of a mental exercise than these senses? Certainly it's known that smelling fresh-baked cookies makes you want to eat them so the senses do play some part. Realtors tell you to bake cookies before showing the house so it feels like a "home" to the prospectiver buyers. That's mental attitude. No two people have the same number of taste buds and their perception of sweet, sour, bitter, etc. differs. People in a workplace have in their desks potato chips, granola bars, things that don't necessarily have a smell. When they go to the vending machines they can't smell the candy bars but they buy them anyway. Is it from boredom, stress, habit? New cars have that unmistakable smell, but that doesn't make you want to run out and eat, does it? Too many times we eat simply because we think we should eat meals at a set time whether we're hungry or not. Tests have shown that when M&Ms are in a larger bowl people will eat more than from a smaller one. There are now specially designed plates for diabetics that have portion controlled sections for protein and carbs. Dieters are recommended to use smaller-sized plates and bowls. Is this mental or involving the senses?

Other studies show women are susceptible to the smell of bananas for sexual arousal. Men respond to pumpkin pie and lavender. What do you think their priority is going to be at that moment? I'd bet almost anything they'll forego the food.

I have a question for Heleyna: Do you KNOW any obese people or are you one of these thin people on the sidelines with your own brand of pop psychology as to why they're obese? Have you ever read any studies or seen any documentaries about people undergoing bariatic surgery and they explain why they got that big? Yes, some do like to eat to excess, but that doesn't mean they're not aware of the harm they're doing themselves. Where are the caring friends and family helping them regain control? Certainly a person can change only her/himself, but everyone needs help. Pregnancy adds on the pounds and an exercise routine may not be a priority. Medications can cause weight gain but the alternative of stopping may be more harmful. Depression is another example. Can anyone pinpoint when depression spiraled out of control along with the weight? Do you think finding motivation is easy then? And what about the nurse/doctor who weighs a person and says "I wouldn't have guessed you weighed that much!" OK, so the person thinks if gained a few pounds and still look good, then maybe another couple pounds won't hurt. Harmful thinking, but it happens. Don't be so judgmental until you've lived more of life.
There is still that little human problem called greed?
