Are there any methods you would recommend to acquire better impulse control?
What can I do to overcome this?
Answer:
I suggest that you are just extremely bored with your current life situation and seek extraneous outlets for your frustrations.
Try to find a positive outlet for those pent up frustrations. Find an activity that inspires you to excel and immerse yourself in.
Being productive as an aftereffect of diligent and concerted effort will elicit as much emotional joy as those other bad habits you mentioned.
Habits are hard to break sometimes. You have to really work at it. Learning to think things through before you take action is key. That might mean removing yourself from a situation when you feel the need to immediately react -(unless not reacting will endanger you somehow)...find a quiet place to be alone, and count to twenty. Then take a few deep, slow breaths. THEN try and think about the situation...think about your options, and try to be as open minded about those options as possible. Weigh the pros and cons of your potential decisions before you make them. Don't react until you're sure you've adequately thought things through. Sometimes it helps to keep a journal. Or talk to someone who is outside the situation and get their viewpoint, before you take action. I know this sounds like a lot of work, and it is...but if you're serious about changing, this is what you need to do. In time, (and it may take awhile) you won't have to "go find a quiet place to think", you'll be able to go through the necessary motions in order to make a sound decision more quickly and easily. It takes time to break habits, and to form new ones, but you can do it! Good luck!
