I am so lost!!?

And I am beginning to get discouraged beacuse people that are suspose to be counseling keep telling me that there is no money in my career field and no promise of job security. And to even get considered I need atleast a Masters.

I have always be interested in the mind and I really want to work in the field of psychology but what am I suspose to do when I keep getting slapped in the face with things like this.

I am already 24 and I am worreid that I have waited too late to finish my degree. I guess I'm looking at the situation like this: Who wants to hire a 30 something person just now coming out of college.

What am I suspose to do, please help me. Maybe some answers from actual psychologist.

Answer:
First of all...STOP FRETTING. Who cares how long it takes you to get your Masters?

Pursue your passion in life. Work part time to pay for school if you have to. Who cares if it takes your whole life?

People re-invent themselves all the time, go back to school at 40 or 50 or even 60 and over.

My daughter wants to be a psychologist and I'm not going to discourage her. She is a wonderful, warm and caring human being, having met wonderful people her whole life in organizations like Girl Guides, Camps for kids with cancer, etc. that she has a strong network of friends (moreso than I do!) at the tender age of 15...so I would never stand in her way or discourage her dreams.

You would be surprised at how MANY people will want to hire someone MATURE who has spent a decade studying...believe me that should be the LEAST of your concerns.

So get out there, study, and remember, a lot of people will benefit from your education so focus all your energies there.

Money is not everything. You will be so busy with your career you won't even have time to spend it, and a really good psychologist can make $100 an hour or better.

But honestly, people in fields like yours do it because they care about humanity, and it's not about money.
who ever is telling u , there is no money. those are all bullcrap. dont believe those. as far as i know. for a psycologist, the money is goodddddddd babyyy. by the way how much money u wanna make. ?
you arent lost you just have conflicting opinions. well then those who say theres no money, then prove them wrong.
First, who on earth told you there's no money in this? If you get hired to do private counseling for rich people OMG there's tons of money!

Second, 24 is so incredibly young *lol* Average age to start working in that career IS 30

If this is what you really want to do with your life, stop listening to the people who tell you otherwise, bottom line it's none of their business and it's your choice, yours alone. It may take a long time, alot of studying, bu if this is your calling, it will pay off in the long run.
Have you considered social work. A BS in social work is more marketable than general psychology. Of course, with a masters you are still better off. If you work along the way, you will still get job references. I dont know about psychology but with social work you have an internship and you get job references and EXPERIENCE. Its not your age that maters most.
It is never to late to get your degree. I got my last masters at the age of 39, and I got several job offers. It wasn't in the psychology field, but I don't think it matters. Actually, I think your age will be an asset. First of all, you are more mature and will be more focused in grad school, and second, if I am speaking to a psychologist, I would rather speak to someone who is old enough to have had some life experience so I can relate to them. Believe me, there is money is the psychology field. I've paid for counseling; I should know.
Who says anyone needs to hire you? The opportunities available to you,self-employment,academic structures, prison facilities, the list goes on and on.Don't listen to the negative nellies out there,if this is your road, you pursue it with passion, doors open. Courage!!
stay in school stay in school STAY IN SCHOOL!

I can totally relate to you on this. I wanted to be a pyschologist more then anything, but everyone would tell me that it would take like 10 years. I became so discouraged that I decided that it just wasnt what i wanted. Now... I'm working at "wonderful' Sam's Club making $10.00 an hour. And I'm 25. This is not where I was suppose to be at 25. You have to do what makes you happy, if this is what will make you happy, then it doesnt matter what other people think. ok well my cat is humping my leg (yes my CAT) my Q to exit.
I agree with Eve. I have always wanted to have a career in psychology, but I didn't get my MA until I was 37. Now I'm working on my Ph.D. and won't be finished until I'm about 42.

Yet, as Eve and others have suggested, it is most important that you follow your passion, your heart. If you are so concerned about the money, then you are going into the field for the wrong reasons, or just going into the wrong field! To progress in this field, it is important and necessary to obtain higher degrees. It depends highly on what you want to do in this field: teach, counsel/therapy, psychotherapy, testing, research, etc.

So, as one of the respondents suggested, "don't fret" about it and follow your heart. And, get some therapy yourself. It will help you not only personally, but professionally because you will have the inner knowledge and understanding of what your future clients/patients will be going through. Personally, it has helped me not only better understand myself which allowed me to change and grow, but it helped me also to be a more compassionate and understanding therapist. (It also gave me insights and tools that now amount of education could give me!)

Hope that helps!
