What is the best response when someone you know sends you an Internet hoax?

This may seem like a trivial problem, but I am tired after years of being sent stupid hoax emails and I am also tired of people's hostility when I tell them they passed on a hoax ( I provide proof) and/or ask them (nicely) not to send me such material again.

My cousin (whom I was close to my entire life) is no longer speaking to me because of this issue. I am really angry that whomever starts hoaxes or passes them on, not only frightens people for no reason, they can damage or destroy relationships, too. Best way I know to put a stop to it is to ask people not to pass them on. Any ideas?

Answer:
Some people are just very easily offended, or hate having it pointed out that they made a mistake, even if they did make one. It's a personality defect.

So if somebody sends you a virus warning ("OMG did you hear about this new virus? it turns your hard-drive into a pepperoni pizza, with extra pepperoni") or a sick-child story ("send an email to littledarling@hotmale.com and Bell Labs will donate a testicle for each one received") or wonders if they have really won the lottery or are about to receive an inheritance, it's quite ok to say "I'm sorry - that probably isn't true - see the link" and give them a news link that quietly lets them know they are very stupid.

You should not yourself imply that the sender is not actually smarter than Einstein, because there are lots of not-very-bright people out there who get surprised and offended at being told that.
Give them a hoax too to make them feel as you feel and maybe they'll understand.
ask them not to pass them on. providing proof to people that they got scammed on a hoax, makes them feel stupid so they have to get all pissed off to try to play it off. I tried to point it out to people and asked to not get them but it never works.
Threatening them does. Tell them you have no other choice but to report them as spam. I have done that. I lost a few friends, but the true friends will stop when you ask them to.
When ever you get an email unwanted from somebody please tick the box on left column and click the bar as SPAM . click this column then the email from this fellow will never come to you in your id unless until you permit.
beat the ** out of them make them hurt like they deserve make them cry like a little *** knock them out pour gasoline on them light them on fire and pray to god that they burn in hell
