What does a professor mean when she makes this statement about a student?

That's the guy you need..thank you so for helping him. He's quite bright..he is just a little different. We've all taken him under our wings.

Yes this is in college and the guy is like 26 years old

Answer:
It seems we are trying to carry out postmortem of her statement. She only meant that the guy needed help and by doing so all the class has done a good thing. I do not think, there is any need of catching the words and analyzing their meanings etc.

I'm thinking... Rain Man? I don't know. It's that "he is just a little different" part that makes me think "special" like he's got some sort of mental handicap or disorder or something that makes it harder for him to learn even though he may be smart.

But maybe I'm completely hearing this statement wrong though from the way it was truly said.
Sounds like he is either handicapped in some way or he is an eccentric genius.
