Why do people name drop?
This guy I know name drops a lot but to give him the benefit of the doubt his work brings him in contact with some famous people. Why do this is it to bolster self esteem/ego, impress people?
Answer:
Funny you should ask that David Beckam asked me the same question only last month.
.
i think there are two answers to this.
you do it b/c you work with famous people and its your day to day, or you do it b/c you want people to admire you. one of my good friends is a ford model and i have worked around people that are famous but i dont go around living through their accomplishments.
or maybe you're just feeling inferior about the whole situation
I have found that people who name drop want you to think that because they no such and such people that they are important and more important than you and I. which is definitely not the case. It is very rude behavior. It is purely an ego thing for them, but if you don't let it bother you, then they have gained absolutely nothing.
bingo. he probably just passed them on the street in reality. i once rode in an elevator with rob lowe. see where that got him.
They probably thinks that it makes them look more important and it does boost their ego in some weird way.

Poor self image that we think is enhanced by knowing someone famous or interesting. Sad little people aren't we!!??
Me and george clooney were just saying the same thing!
Because in some cases it's not what you know, it's who you know.
ur friend doesn't feel important enough w/ his own accomplishments, so he makes up aquaintences w/ important people.
it annoys me too
it's just boasting "look at me look who I know"
mainly to impress people and to make themselfs feel important he probibly has very little confidence in himself
if he can detatch his name dropping in his personal life and dosnt need it to form his identity then i would say no probs! if the name dropping seriously gives him his self worth, he may have to look at the man in the mirror and be himself not the people he feeds off to give him significance
If you look at it from the perspective of the celebrities -its the lowest kind of toadying..I saw a famous person (about as famous as you can get on planet earth) on the beach in East Sussex, playing with two small kids. It was such a shock for me. He immediately saw that I had recognised him and gave a look as if to say "so what?" or "oh no, here we go". I just looked away. I would really hate to be famous!
arrrgh ... drop it ...
hi, fiery. well to begin with talking about work all the time can be a sign of a defencive way to avoid emotional issues. also nowadays people are so caught up with fame and celebrity status for recognition and basically to live a easy life which lets face it we all want. do you know if this person enjoys his job? is he trying to impress you maybe?
perks of the job [i think] should be kept for close friends and family other wise you become a whore to the slavery of fame in turn begs the question how shallow is this person?
It sounds like a easy way to popularity using other people to achieve..... whatever??
thanks for the question
