A common method for selecting representative samples is to select?

Random sampling

The most distinctive characteristic of the experimental method is that it ?

Manipulates a variable or variables.

A psychologist observes the confrontation between two rival neighborhood gangs from the window of an abandoned building. This method of collecting observations is best described as?

Naturalistic observation

Jennifer scored in the 95th percentile on her ACT. This percentile means she?

She is not stupid as the first answerer implies. It means she is very smart, as 95% of all scores fall below her score i.e she is in the top 5%.

Doctor McAlister is conducting a double-blind study to assess the impact of "smart-tastic," an experimental drug, on people's intelligence. The dependent variable in this study would be?

The dependent variable is the what you are looking at, so in this case it is intelligence. The first poster answered the placebo, which is in fact part of the independent variables (the drugs) as they are being manipulated.

Which of the following coefficients of correlation indicates the strongest relationship between two sets of variables?

+1

In an effort to prevent participants in an experiment from trying to confirm the researchers' predictions, psychologists sometimes?

Do double blind studies

Psychologists study animals because?

Well there are many reasons, if you are an animal psychologist you will be studying animals for a different reason that a behavioural psychologist.

It might be to see whether certain theories could work and then be used on animals (behaviour modification techniques are often tried on animals first) or to see whether drugs work or to understand how their brain works and to see if it applies to humans

Which research method provides the best way of assessing whether cigarette smoking boosts mental alertness?

I in part agree with the first answerer here, but the trouble is, you are not taking into account that these people are (most likely) addicted to nicotine and so may not function as well without a smoke (I do not know, as I do not smoke so if it is wrong you smokers will have to correct me :)) So that cigarette might help then when it may not necessarily help those who do not smoke.

I personally would think getting a few groups and compare them, so say a control, people who don't smoke and get them to have a smoke (ethical though?) and people who do smoke.

In an effort to prevent participants in an experiment from trying to confirm the researchers' predictions, psychologists sometimes? do double blind
Psychologists study animals because? they want to see if the affect will be the same on humans
Which research method provides the best way of assessing whether cigarette smoking boosts mental alertness? giving mental alertness tests to people who smoke. once when they haven't had a cigarette and the same test after having a cigarette
