What causes Narcissism?

Have read the definition of narcissism and how it relates to a person having an over-inflated sense of ego and love for one self to the point of conceitfullness, but what causes a person to become narcissistic?
Is it because the person is trying to compensate for something that's lacking, or would that person have genuine cause? Could it even be a form of mental illness?
Am just trying to understand it better.
Any thoughts please?

Answer:
A genetic trait.
The trait of narcissism is noted to be less labile than that of aggression. The innate stereotypic acts associated with the trait include flaunting body posturing, expansive arm gestures, bowing, colorful self-adornment, and a natural attraction to the limelight of personal recognition. Individuals of the pure N type are competitive but non-aggressive in their strivings for recognition. The trait corresponds to a striving for
glory in one's environment, hence is the second main component of human ambition. In a pejorative connotation the unbridled trait of narcissism may reveal itself in the context of conceit, exhibitionism, vanity and messianism. An associated innate facial expression is the radiant gingival smile (broadly exposing gums and teeth). The facial complexion tends toward blood red or ruddy in individuals of light skin color. Hallmarks of the trait include blushing, flushing, and a mass discharge of the parasympathetic nervous system: the narcissistic rage of defense and withdrawal. During the expression of this rage the normally sanguine complexion becomes even more florid.
some people jst really think they're stuff don't stink.
Many people, including many psychologists, believe that narcissism is a product of our times and our system of values.Ref In the western world in particular, we are constantly bombarded by images of the ideal through the media, this may contribute to the rapid growth of narcissism in society. In extreme cases, narcissism may be linked to invocation whereby an individual's normal personality is replaced by another. This psychological state,

Narcissism or at least narcissistic personality disorder is usually an over-compensation for a low self-worth or a 'defect' so to speak. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder usually have self-doubts or feel worthless in some way or the other and then use the narcissism as a defense against this feeling --- that way they protect themselves by thinking they are better than everyone else around them. So u r right when you say that the person is trying to compensate for something they lack and yes, it can be a mental illness when it begins to affect their social relationships and of course, meets the other DSM-IV criteria.

I've also heard that usually individuals who are narcissistic can haave parents who have helped promote this by making them think they are the best --- then when they do feel worthless they use this defense that they are the best. However, I am unsure about research in this particular area.

Hope this helps...
since childhood we all see a world invented and built up by those who existed before us. Everyone feels alienated and wants to belong, at some level, although some will indignantly deny this. The presentation of a positive cooperative ambitious self, to others around you, is a normal kind of inner validation process. The perceptive reality of each one in their designated "being group", is perpetually being shaped by the combined volitions of all within the group. Some people come off as swanky salesmanish mannerisms that can easily be mistaken for both greed, want of power, and vanity...but in fact just as likely an innocent "want to contribute" and fit in "be worth ones salt" that from childhood we are all conditioned to be. The way I test my own narrcissism potential is to imagine myself in a deep thought provoking conversation with a few say,. playboy models, and then just as many hunky chippendale guys enter the room..do I change in the middle of my sentence in any way.everyone should consider dwelling on similar insights from time to time because if a self doubt fear of inadequacy condition goes unchecked it can lead to this build up of self over others attitude, which is actually a cover for their weakness, or narrcisistic behavior. I recently re-evaluated my tendency to "get the last word" and "know it all" attitude I thought I was displaying.this can be a humbling experience, but to get grounded again is worth it. after all what is realization of existence experience but relationships with others, what is relationships with others but effective communication, what is communication skill if not practiced/ reflected upon, self improvement insights and personal empathatic understandings with regards to the "cumulative synoptic paragon" of this human group we all share together.

"Could it even be a form of mental illness?"

People that you give this label know exactly what they are doing in the present. Why seek excuses when that is what feeds into the behavior?
