Are all these 'stressed' and 'depressed' people in the UK taking the Mickey?

I know some cases are genuine, but my neighbour, one of my friends and another person I know of are all on tablets or taking time off work with stress.

I have stress in my life - we all do - at the end of the day we are all in the same boat (life!) so why don't I just go off sick too??

Answer:
we live at at depressing time on this earth, am on the boat too.
If that's how you feel, then you should. I hear your point and some people take the p1ss but i have been off work with stress and anxiety as i suffer from panic attacks and depression, its a serious business, just because its not a physical illness people judge and laugh-but until you've been there you can't comment.
Even Stephen Fry suffers from Depression. I got the same feeling, when i turned the Telly over and Big Brother was on.
there is a difference you are a hard working stright forward person who wants a good life or as much as poss and is willing to work for it where as they are just dole dossers who will never amount to much
I don't know about other people but when i was suffering from depression i was genuinly ill and did have to take time off work. Fortunately i am well now. I do agree though that there are some people who use it as a excuse. A friend of mine used to say she couldn't leave the house because she was agrophobic and depressed but i saw her out shopping when she thought no one was around. After all the time i went around there to take her places and things i felt a bit taken for a ride.
Im sick of hearing about people who describe themselves as depressed or stressed without any good reason to be so.
We are talked, or brainwashed!,into being stressed by large pharmaceutical companies who make billions from the tablets they sell. Hyped up by media agencies, a lot of people fall for the expert advice that only this particular brand of tablets could help you overcome your ailment. People need to get on with their lives, just like they did through the war. Stress is a natural human process and helps us to push on and succeed.
Depression is a real diagnosable illness. People will often say they are depressed when they are simply unhappy.

Stress is another misused word. A few examples of real stress would be 1. living in constant fear of death (perhaps in battle or under torture). 2. Watching your child die. 3. Leaping from the World Trade Centre 9/11/2001. etc.

Comparing these things with stress in our everyday lives and jobs shows that what we refer to as stress is often self imposed - when all we need to do is to change something or get a grip of our difficult situation.
As a person diagnosed with clinical depression around the same time as breast cancer, I kind of know where you are coming from.
One man that worked with my husband claimed to be off work with stress. His boss walked in on him in the pub lunch time to see him having a ball with his beer buddies. If you're really depressed, last thing you are able to do is be jolly.
Doctors seem to be dishing out sick notes and anti depressants too easily these days. It's just easier for them I guess.
My mother in law's best friend has depression, because, get this.her husband wants to fit new windows on the house himself instead of getting a firm in.So, she's on tablets for depression because of it.
A lad living next door to my parents, never worked a day in his life.Claimed dole since leaving school, he's now 36.Says he suffers with his back and stress, yet can bend down fast enough when a old lady dropped a fiver on the supermarket floor, only to shove it in his own pocket.
I think everyone at some point in their lives becomes depressed, some people find it hard to cope with their depression and so it becomes worse and turns into panic attacks and anxiety disorders which is not fun to live with. I feel we should all try to be a little supportive of each other and just because we live in different countries don't me to say we cant give each other a little pat on the back every now and then even if it has to be on FunQA.com
Just abour everyone feels stress these days, even people on a factory production line where it'd be something we used to just associate with management.

Depression is something very diffrerent, a it can be a very serious illness which has lead to deaths but because there's very few physical symptoms it's just used as an excuse for many to be lazy or fiddle the benefit system.

I'm stunned when i see someone found guilty of benefit fraud leaving the court only made to pay back the last 12 months money, they should be paying everything they claimed, have a huge fine and lose the right to claim for anything ever again.
There are some people who genuinely have a problem, but a lot of the time people are just bored with their lives and refuse to get off their arses and actually change that. Being "depressed" gets you attention, people fuss over you-so much easier than finding a hobby!
I think depression is something which is avery serious illness and shouldbe treated as such. It sometimes needs to be treated with medicine aswell as other things. Stress however, should not be cured with pills (unless it is extreme stress i.e. panic attacks - extreme anxiety). Massive pharmaceutical companies want people to believe that pills are the way to cure everything. however, some people do have a lot of stress in their jobs and this can lead to depression, so I think time off is a necessary thing in some cases. its just seperating these cases from the lazy people who cant be arsed to do something positive with their lives instead of taking pills and watching the tv.
i thought the same as yourself i was very sceptical about it just thought people where swinging the lead(making it up)

until my wife was diagnosed with depression and even then was not sure until
i spoke with the doctors ,psychiatrist ,heath workers
its a silent illness which robs a person of their personality their self esteem their life
like i say its a silent illness people struggle along until they cant cope anymore it destroys life not just their own but but their close family members who try their best to help but have no idea which way to go about it
and for you to say its just stress is totally wrong!
all people are different we all react in different ways
but to be so blind about others illness is nothing short of being inconsiderate
to label people on what you think is wrong
you have no idea or understanding or the suffering people who live with this

and to accuse them of" taking the mickey"

just goes to what a shallow person you really are!!!!
My mum is on tablets for depression, and although she doesnt work, because shes 62 i might add. she stills goes about her everyday life, she looks after my 3 year old little boy and does lots of things for other people. She has been like it all her life, and still managed to work...

She has not once let this beat her, she has her bad days but she always forces herself to go out, get on with what she has to do.. not hide indoors and feel sorry for herself.

I know a couple who where signed off by their doctor because of stress from their neighbour!!! she has now moved, they are still both off work!!! due to stress, apparently he cant work and she is expecting their 3rd child, they live in a council house... Yet he seems perfectly alright to me, they both do.. but while the social still pay them benefits and the council pay most of their rent what reason have they to go back to work!!!
I have had depression, and sometimes life can get too much, such as getting out of bed. Stress can affect the way people function at work and sometimes time off work is necessary. Maybe she is being bullied? There are so many factors you have to consider. My brother cannot work as he cannot cope with stress.
A lot of `stressed` and depressed people turn to religion, thinking it will either cure them or help them; hence so many religious but non-practising religious people.
If they tried to stand up for themselves and not expect others to help them, they may find that they have an inner strength which they didn`t know they had before.
That is not to say that all `stressed` people are the same. Some are genuine, but strong character will shine through if only they would assert themselves and stop feeling sorry for themselves and expecting others to get over it for them.
It`s called `self-pity.`
Oh, and a god won`t help any, he only exists in the mind.
i totally agree
I once set an essay entitled
'Stress is self induced; discuss'. The best essay handed in went into the various models of stress, ways of mediating stress and controlling it and finished with the immortal words
'it's all in the way you see it.'
Its a very problematic arena ~ definitions of 'stress' and 'of the effects of' on individuals. It's similar to 'back~aches' where you can't x-ray and therefor 'prove' that someone has or has NOT got a backache.

Likewise, you can't demonstrate that anyone suffers from claustrophobia - until you have been with a sufferer when stuck in a lift or an underground train (or even trying to calm them over the phone).

I used to deal with 'Emergency' situations and was ready to over 8, 10 and 14 hour shifts. And although there could be hours of relative peace and idleness, there were 'tensions' in the background at times - these could include the 'will I get it wrong, make a mistake and be the cause of a death!

This can hang there and over a period, it can take its toll - personally so much so that I grew to _''HATE'_ and detest the sound of a phone (any phone) ringing.

The sight of a 'Buff' coloured envelope sent one woman I knew into 'hysterics' and she would lock herself in her bedroom.

So, why don't YOU take off work on a sicky? Good question. Why don't' you?

Maybe your answer has to do with honesty and or integrity! Mine was ~ because when I enjoyed my work, I took pride in what I did and in doing it very, very well. I loved it.

Sash.
It's just to get off work
some people cant handle stress and others can. im 18 and have been stressed all my life because of things that happened in my childhood and life just keeps getting worse for me lately. i chose to get over it myself rather than help from anti depressants, im working on it now. after everything ive been through im surprised im still here, but im determined to make a difference for myself. some can do this others cant it depends on the person. if you feel this strongly about it maybe you are depressed yourself? lifes a ***** otherwise it wouldnt be worth living
Do you have depression like these people-or are you just stressed, there is a big difference!
Depression is a genuine medical condition caused by a chemical reaction in the brain.
