meditate.
Set your alarm and get up earlier. No TV or video games after 7pm. Time after that is reserved for quieter activities like reading. TV and video games tend to keep your brain working over time. No caffine after dinner either. Keep the caffine intake to a minimum.
You should start reading a text book which has boring subjects. :)
Warm milk
or Nyquil
Cut up and onion and put it in a jar. As you go to bed, open the jar, sniff the onion and then close it and place it on your bedstand. Within 15 minutes you'll be asleep.
if you can tell me the background why a person cannot sleep, i can suggest remedy.
sip warm tea, read a book,
do not do computer, tv, movies or game that just keeps your brain on active mode and you will never get to sleep that way.
You can do a lot of things. FIRST, do not let yourself starve before sleeping. Eat a little bit. SECOND avoid any electronics at least 30 minutes before sleeping. THIRD Exercise early that day to tire yourself out. FOURTH, you can try bubble bath before sleeping. FIFTH, try sleeping in a cozy chilly place. SIXTH, try buying this homeopathic pills from wild oats called CalmsForte. It's all natural unlike sleeping pills which has addicting substance in it. SEVENTH, try your hardest not to think of stress, what you're gonna do the next day while your sleeping. EIGHT, try and sleep around the same time, to make your body used to being sleepy at that time. If these dont work, try going to a psychologist and ask for any advices that might help you. I wouldn't recommend sleeping pills though. REALLY.
Drink a glass of warm milk with one table spoon of sugar, this reminds us of the first stages of life when we were fed by our mothers milk and then we slept right after that, try it out it really works
well first of all, ur probably not sleepin because you are worried about somethin. you gotta find somethin to ease your mind, and try to control your breathing. long, deep slow breaths are the best for slowing your heart rate. drink a glass of milk, smoke a doobie, or do somethin to calm yourself.
Short term assistance:
*eat/drink something with tryptophans in it (nature's sleep chemical) - warm milk (heat it, don't add boiling water, maybe add some honey - bananas also have tryptophans.
*attend to physical comfort - make sure you're not hungry or thirsty, make sure the temperature is right for you - not too hot or cold, a well made bed also helps, and no tight clothing
*reduce noise - use earplugs if necessary
*relaxation exercises - try progressive relaxation where you start at your toes and work up to your head and tense and relax every muscle you can think of on the way - or creative visualisation - think of a safe and comfortable place to be mentally and go with this - pretending to be a tiger lying in the warm sun is helpful for me
*there are also acupressure points you can use - search on google
*persuade someone to give you a massage
*write down any issues (you don't need answers) - this can 'get them off your chest' for the night.
Long term:
*aviod caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate) after 6pm, reduce overall caffeine intake if you have too much
*don't use alcohol as a sedative
*attend to physical needs - fresh air, eating and drinking properly, exercise
*look at some form of stress management if it's necessary - yoga is good

this might not help much, but try sleeping on your back, and focus on getting warm, and feeling the warmth, and letting it sink into you. and don't think about anything else.

Well, the solution depends on what the underlying factors are. There are medical conditions that can cause insomnia and thus need medical treatment (hypothyroidism, for example). Some people cannot sleep simply due to bad habits (for example, drinking too much coffee late in the evening, playing tense video games just before bed, etc). Finally, some people have difficulty "turning off their mind" at night due to a mental or nervous condition or even just an anxious personality. For these people, counseling or medications may be necessary.
If you have excessive or prolonged difficulty sleeping, you may have a sleep disorder that needs the attention of a sleep specialist (usually a board certified neurologist or psychiatrist). Your primary care doctor can probably refer you to one.
1.)Mind works on laws of reverse effect ,ie if you want to make the mind to sleep, it will not sleep. Similarly you want to make the mind awake it will not awake rather it will try to sleep.
2.)Following above laws , try to awake whole night by reading, listening the music and other activities ,or just go to bed close your eyes gently and be awake watching your thoughts, do not be panic to sleep. This teqnique will make you sleep.
3). Your panic to sleep must be vanished by following the point 2. To vanish the sleep panic, it may take few weeks , and in future too if sleepnessness comes then also follow point 2.
Have a really good conversation with somebody.
Others have answered you with good advice. I would never drink warm milk, it's like drinking it from a cow. I have the same symptoms and take alprozalam, (xannax) and it is effective by prescription.
Some people just can't sleep at night. I am one of them. My medication if effective and I have no other suggestions.

Look at things that vary in color. If you have ever been to an art museum, you will find you are very tired after looking at everything. This is because your brain is trying to process all of the colors and needs to rest. Also bright colors make your eyes tired.
What I do: If its a matter of stress, try having a notepad by your bed and right down whats stressing you. when you wake up, you see it, and take care of it. This helps me because it puts my mind to ease knowing that I did something to solve the problem in the future. Also, I just lay down and with every breath I take, I count. For example: Breathe in. oooonnnnnneeeeee. Breathe out. ttttwwwwwwoooooo. Breathe in. ttttttttttttthhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrr... And I keep doing that, and around 15 i usually start over. You should drag it out through the whole breath, and it also helps to visualize the number in your head. It keeps my mind from wandering, and its not too engaging to visualize it so I fall asleep fast. Good luck, and hope this helps.
