Why do you think negative stereotypes persist of gifted individuals even in the face of contrary evenence?

Answer:
Stereotypes exist for a reason. They are made up from the majority that they see, therefore in an average persons eyes, all the people are the same way as the majority of the type of person the average person sees. If I see 10 black people shoplift in my life so far, therefore all black people shoplift. Thats how the unintellectual mind jumps to conclusions. Are there exceptions? of course.
Thats all an example of stereotypes in general though. Stereotypes with individuals means there is insecurity, denial, and maybe you just suck and want to make someone feel bad. Either way, the person doing the stereotyping needs to learn to accept others if he is doing nothing negative himself.
Because the VAST majority of people in the world are FAR too dumb to understand and appreciate the EVIDENCE.
Negative stereotypes exist because regular people are generally scared by those gifted individuals. People who are gifted are different than everyone else and thus challenge our way of thinking and our way of life. This scares people. And things that scare people are generally viewed as bad. Thus the negative stereotype is passed down from generation to generation.
No one wants to admit that these type of ppl really do exist.

I mean, no one wants to admit that there are really ppl who just are born "good" at something.

Its almost an insult to those of us who have to work all the freakin' time to get better at the same thing!

I have babysat a little guy around 5 who's really gifted in #s and concepts. But I see that he isn't gifted at all with his social skills. He has changed my mind about how to look at this.

I do have something to show him after all because I have shown him how to grate cheese for pizza & how to ask another kid to play with him. I think if you are such a gifted individual to have some compassion as well.

I also teach him that others aren't stupid just because they can't do the gift that he can. I find that is also a problem amongst kids who have gifts as he isn't the first one I met.
I think a lot of it is jealousy. People want to believe that if others have an advantage over them, those others must have a disadvantage as well.
All of these answers are stereotypical of those that think they are answiering as if THEY are gifted. big HAH. Sounds mostly like rambling to me.

So stereo0types exist because, as humans, we anticipate circumstances many times a day, and most observations are based on comparison of self. So, like word association, looks convey a certain type. While there are some cases where that doesn't work, they are just miniscule compared to the successful pre-judgements.

The first part was just to be comedic, I wanted to break the stereotypical "smart" answer. :)
Maybe because people often look at gifted individuals as gifted in everything. When you look beyond the stereotyping and the labling, you might find a person gifted in some things and not so gifted in other things and maybe a little more like us than we care to admit.
