Can a guilty conscience make you accidentally give yourself away?
I would go ahead and write her an email detailing what I did and that I was sorry. and then delete it. I thought that maybe she was better not knowing - it would upset her and get me fired. I did this over and over again, deleting each time. Then one time I went to save the draft of the email(hotmail) and it errored and I was not able to access the email draft but it did not show sent. I was called in to my boss and told that a coworker had asked me not to send personal emails. He said she had declined to say what was in the email but I was to stop.
Am I disappointed on some level that I was not punished as expected? I did not consiously want to have the email sent but to be honest I regretted what I did to her now that I knew her better.

maybe there's a higher punishmint coming! i.e. her doing something back to you her not giving you help when needed!
by the sounds of it you hurt her emotional!
also she took the high road by not stating what happend seems like she wants nothing to do with you!

What makes humans superior to animals is our desire to figure out things, have meaning, and the quest for justice! As a decent person, you need to see things set straight to have a clear conscience. So why don't you talk to her in person about this, especially since you're already friends?
It is important for people to forgive and make restitutions, as you are here. I think the fact that many people today don't accounts for the high rates of cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease. (Of couse, our diet and environment are other big factors)...
You'll live a healthier, happier life if you are in the habit of making things right, and hopefully, this is the beginning of a life-long habit. It's never easy, but doing the right thing never is.
