Is OCD a bad thing to have? And if so, how?
People say that I need to help my OCD... and I know how... but it literally pains me.
If I don't follow a certain "rule", then my muscles ache because I didn't do it right or something...
Some people say it's not bad but time consuming.
Some people say it's stupid... and I don't know why or how it happens... but it does. I have it.
Any suggestions as to 1. how to get rid of it and 2. how to motivate myself to actually TRY and get rid of it?
Answer:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a anxiety disorder. Many people have anxiety disorders. Its not one of the bad mental illnesses. Behavior Therapy is what you need to work it out. You need to use the technique of exposure with response prevention. The exposure component involves putting yourself in the situation that causes the obsessive thought. The response prevention prevents the compulsive behavior from occuring.
For example say that you do not like to get dirty, stick your hands in the dirt and avoid washing your hands for a period of time. you will learn to tolerate the anxiety triggering the OCD. Soon you will feel less compelled to perform the specific ritual. Soon you will learn that nothing bad happened from the event and the compulsive behavior subsides.
If this doesn't work SSRI's like Prozac or Paxil also helps with the OCD and cognitive behavioral therapy along with drug therapy also helps overcome OCD.
Just keep your head up and not worry about what anybody else thinks. I wish you lots of luck.
Start with slow steps to correct it. (It'd be better if we knew what it was) Gradually increase these steps until you've outgrown your OCD. Motivation comes from within, so thats entirely on you.
OCD sucks, I know because I used to follow the rituals myself. You don't feel you have control, and stupid obsessions you act out are a way for you to feel control. You need to meditate and get a hobby! It will help you let go of everything bad that haunts you. Exercise your mind because it worked for me. I no longer walk up the steps starting with my right foot and end with my left, as well as check the wake up alarm 8 times including a spin...oh yeah
I have OCD and to me, it seems like sometimes it's just an annoyance and other times it's negative.
It depends on how much it controls you I suppose. You have to see whether it's forcing you to go out of your way and do things you normally wouldn't do. Is it causing you frustration, and is it inconveniencing others around you?
If you answered yes to a lot of these, you might want to see professional help and see if there's anything someone can do for you. :-)
I also have a slight case of OCD, i have come to find that eveyone has a little in them. OCD can be bad if too intense, but good if it is slight, it can help you to be a more tidy and clean. However, as i have learned is the case with mine, it wastes money. I have to have all my pens be the same brand or I get frustrated, so I'm constantly having to go out and buy new packs of pens, and of couse I "have" to buy the most expnsive set! There's no cuere, so if you've got it, you're stuck with it, and might as well just live with it. I've tried stoppign my other strange habits, but I can't. At least it helps me look professional.
Most people have a few things that they obsess about or do compulsively. If they are not harmful and don't interfere with their lives, there is no problem. The problems come when the rituals are too many and/or too time consuming and do interfere with daily living. I don't believe you can cure it, but you can learn to control it. I don't believe you can do it alone, but with the help of a good therapist and possibly medication, if you're willing to go that route.
I have OCD...or at least I used to. I had this issue with counting things and patterns. I had to fight really hard to stop it, and I still do it...just not as much. I can't help you to stop, but I want to tell you that it's not bad it's just a part of who you ARE. Are. That is a beautiful word. You are you and will always be you. Imagine if you have to be you for the rest of eternity. Wouldn't you like to embrace every part of you? People look down on these things, but very often those sorts of things come with good things. People like to categorize things as good or bad, but it's actually a gray. I see things like OCD as something that comes with things that you were probably given as gifts. Just be glad you are the way you are, even if you spend 10 minutes tapping doorknobs like I do.
Hi there
Really sorry to about the disorder you are suffering, however it sounds like your symptoms are mild which is very positive. there are several different types of treatments available for OCD. the most beneficial form of treatment in your case i feel would be the psychological treatment of cognitive behavior therapy. however an alternative treatment could be medication. excellent benefits have been found in the treatment of cognitive behavioral therapy . With regards to motivation , firstly realize that you do consider it is a problem that you can do without and make an appointment with your G.P and request a referral to a psychologist.
