Answer:
fear of flying is not uncommon, and there aren't many things that i could suggest last minute to help you.but if this is a pervasive problem and you plan on flying in the future, i'd suggest getting in touch with a therapist to help you with some cognitive behavioral therapy (to change the way you react to the stress) and possibly a psychiatrist (to prescribe you some sedatives).
you have a long flight ahead of you, and although distracting yourself might work for some of the time, you will be stuck with the anxiety for much of the trip. if you can, try to talk to your doctor and get some xanax or anxiety meds.
best of luck.
You know of course that by far the safest part of your trip is the time in the aircraft, right? The road trips to and from the airports are orders of magnitude less safe. Apart from remembering that, whilst on the trip give yourself something to concentrate on, a fairly challenging crossword puzzle or Sudoku or something like that.
good luck
I suggest that you compartmentalize your fear.
The most dangerous parts of an airplane journey are the takeoffs and landings. But, the time that the airplane is in these modes is only minutes as compared to hours of steady state flying.
So, try to concentrate first on the plane getting off the ground and into a steady state. Then, you can relax while the plane cruises to its destination. When the plane enters landing mode, it's okay to feel some apprehension and anxiety. But, it will last only a few moments. When the wheels touch the tarmac, you can switch off the anxiety.
Just limit your fear to those few moments during takeoff and landing. The rest of the trip should be fine.
