Why when you have been hurt emotionally you actually feel an odd sensation in you chest?

When I have been hurt emotionally by someone I actually have a sensation in my chest that my heart is almost fluttering. It feels as though I literally have been hurt on the inside.
They say that the heart doesn't feel the ache from emotions, it is just an organ. Then what is it that I felt at that moment, and whenever I rethink it? Is it my brain sending that signal for me to feel that, because subconciously I taught it to respond to emotional hurt that way?
Am I the only one that gets that wrenching feeling?

Answer:
Your brain is very powerful, and your body can be very strongly affected by your emotional state. This is how hypochondria works - the person worries that they have a particular condition and starts thinking about it too much and looking for symptoms, and their body starts to create the symptoms in response. Hysteria is the same sort of thing - if you believe that you have a condition, your brain can cause it to be real.

Emotional state is also highly significant. People who feel emotionally bad will start to feel physically bad as well. Did you know that people who suffer from clinical depression are often plagued with headaches, stomach aches, blood pressure issues, and other health problems? Your mind is not separate from your body, and a bad feeling in your mind will start to affect your body as well.

As for your heart seeming to skip a beat, as they say, the physical sensation is real. It is not your heart "feeling" the emotion of heartbreak, but the heartbreak in your mind and emotions causes your body to react as well, causing this physical heartache, and often things like headaches, dizziness, even nausea.

Remember, your brain controls everything your body does. It can tell your feet to walk, your mouth to chew, and your fingers to type. It is just as capable of telling your heart to sink!
I get that feeling too, and I sometimes wonder the same thing. I actually can feel my heart ache..i'm not sure why the body reacts to strong emotions this way...
I don't think you're really imagining it. We all react differently to pain/loss. sometimes when you're really hurt emotionally Everything hurts and you just feel horrible. I've felt that. I'm not sure though about a pain in my chest. But that feeling like you have a gaping hole and you're just dying yeah I've felt that.

I wouldn't worry about it, if it doesn't hurt too bad you'll be okay. It's just the way you react to pain.
Feelings & emotions are chemically based in the brain. Which is why some people sweat, tremble, hyperventilate when they're scared. We tend to forget that it is the mind that controls the body; so having a physical reaction to distress, bad news, or sadness is very common.
It's probably a variant of the 'fight or flight' feeling we get when we are threatened. This happens in times of stress: when we sense danger, our body increases the adrenalin level and increases our respiratory rate and heartbeat, allowing us to gain an extra burst of strength. In the case of grief, there's something similar going on, probably having to do with the stomach as much as the heart.

A decent psychology text ought to have further explanations. It is indeed about the worst sort of feeling you can have, and everyone experiences it.
it is called an aniety attack. Your heart is breaking emotionally.
It probably is anxiety and your heart is beating faster. I know the feeling all too well. Every time I get upset (even slighty) my chest begins to hurt. I get panic attack and chest pains often, but the slightest emotional discomfort makes my heart literay hurt.
Try to breath slowly when this happens, it is the only thing that makes me feel better!
Yes this is why they call it a broken heart. I didn't realize that until I had my first one, I thought it was metaphorical but guess what its' not. It actually psychically hurts. I thought I was having a heart attack. As much as it hurts and sucks, good news is it does pass and if it happens again (more than likely will) at least you know exactly what it is this time.
