I know most serial killers are psychopaths. Psychopathic behavior is having a lack of empathy/conscience and poor impulse control. There also very well at manipulating people(like Ted Bundy) and they say at a early age some signs can be shown such as obsession with animal abuse.
It seems to me that just about all types of mass murderers are loners. There should be programs in schools to identify these kids before it´s too late and to allow them to adjust to a normal life. The cost of such programs would be more than offset by the saving of future tragedies.
I see your point about feeling more sorry for the killers. I mean they were abused and had to suffer through it then had to grow up in a mental state probably resembling hell. Then could end up in prison for the rest of their life. That is a sad existence of pain and misery. While the victim could of had a normal life up until they were killed and like they say "it is better to have loved and lost than to have ever loved at all".

Child abuse does so much damage to a baby, but so many people are not even aware of how deep the pain can run, with the distortions of reality that make it nearly impossible to recover. If you didn't already know even what most parents consider "spanking" a child is enough to cause (some more than others) very long lasting mental problems.
I would imagine anyone who murders someone else intending to kill them would have some degree of mental health issue. To kill more than one or several, perhaps a more severe condition. The roots of mental health conditions are probably varied - I don't know, I'm not a scientist. If a person has a long term problem then I would hope that help and support is available, and that conditions are monitored to identify potential risks.

However, I reckon there must be a large proportion of murders put down to "heat of the moment" or "last straw" incidents. Not necessarily people with a mental health history, but a state that has built up from outside influences or experiences. Misfortune, ill-treatment, loneliness, etc.

The time it takes for the authorities to catch up with such a person may be the difference between a murderer or a serial murderer.

PS I enjoyed the cocopops answer
In order to get inside of a serial killer's brain, I think it is first important to establish the difference between psychopathic and sociopathic; which are common labels of serial killers.

The most basic way to define the term psychopathic is behaving in a manner that is the only thing known due to it's nature.
This is one way to explain a serial killer's actions. He kills because he does not know anything else. The psychopathic serial killer has no concept of right and wrong, because he was never taught it. Once the psychopath makes a kill, he enjoys it- either by the thrill of it or the exhibition of power that he has over his victims.

Sociopathic, on the other hand, is different. Sociopaths did not start out as ruthless human beings; they became that way through their development. Sociopaths are also the more dangerous of the two. Sociopaths are the intelligent, likable individuals who can blend in easily with society and then jump when nobody expects it.
These individuals are developed into what they are through a number of things... media, society itsef, or even peer pressure.

Once these individuals realize that they enjoy killing, they will continue the act because nothing is stopping them, certainly not their conscience.

Although there have been a lot of studies on the subject, not many conclusions have been drawn. The most basic one is that everyone is different, and some people are born with minds that are inhabitied by this metal illness.

Even the motivation for a serial killer's first murder is not completely known, but it usually amounts to thrills, power, money, or revenge.

Hope that helps.
Child Abuse, Injury to the brain, and Mental Illness are the 3 most common factors in serial killers.
I know most serial killers are brain damaged. Most pee in bed till maybe there preteens, some like to hurt animals as a child, and they like to watch things get burned down. they like fire
A serial killer is made just by killing several people. In terms of what mental health problems they could have it could be several things, psychopathy, schizophrenia ( although this is rarer) etc etc. In terms of psychopaths there is little to explain why they act the way they do, in the UK treatment is given however in the majority of the US psychopaths will be sentenced to death automatically because its believed they cannot be cured. A lot of the time serial killers will have dysfunctional families as it were although there are other serious problems which obviously lead to the killings.

The difference between psychopaths and sociopaths is merely sociopaths are led to the condition through society whereas psychopathy is seen as a combination with emphasis upon it's hereditary origin. Apart from that they really do not differ both are narcissistic, compulsive liars and like-able individuals often very charismatic and enjoy killing often psychologists will realise a psychopath/sociopath upon lack of remorse. Both know right from wrong but simply dont care and probably most importantly don't see that they are ill which other disorders do. Another severe possibility is personality disorders antisocial personality disorder where a person disregards all social rules and norms, they often seek risks in life as it thrills them.
