Why do people dream?
Answer:
To work through their problems and to reinforce what was learned before sleeping. ~
To transfer their temporary memories to permanent memory.
Dreams are often a response to our daily thoughts, activities and sensations. They are often, then, a reflection of what has consumed our minds in the preceding day or two. Dreams are apparently a necessary part of our being. Experiments have been done in which adult subjects were given drugs that progressively eliminated their rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It is during REM that dreams occur. The depriving of the ability to dream resulted in marked personality changes in such subjects. They became increasingly abrasive and anxious and found it difficult to concentrate. It was also shown that the younger a person is, the more important dreams are to their well being.
It's one's way of releasing their insanity and refreshing one's sanity.
My personal philosophy is that dreaming is kind of like the brain's way of cleaning house. If you imagine the brain as a big room full of filing cabinets filled with all of our past life experiences, every now and again some of the drawers get stuffed full and they need to be cleared out and rearranged, etc. So every once and awhile, the brain goes through all the filing cabinets and takes all kinds of old memories, past events, etc., pulls them out and pours them into a dream as a way of saying, "Hey, do we still need to hang on to this?"
Sometimes, by doing that, our subconscious points out connections that we otherwise wouldn't be able to put together, helping us better refine the issues that are currently bothering us, etc. Other times, it's just a bunch of old stuff that needs to get tossed but we look through it one more time before throwing it away - kind of like looking at old love letters or something. A happy memory but no longer applicable and just taking up space, so you browse through it one more time before finally chucking it.
Anyway, that's my theory. Not sure how "scientific" it is, but hope it helps, anyway.
