Has anyone had experience with EMDR therapy?
Anyone had experience with EMDR therapy? What was it like? What was it for? Did it help?

Having both received and given EMDR (I am an EMDR therapist), I can say that it does help a great deal! Your therapist will begin by doing some grounding work to ensure that you are in a good place to begin EMDR therapy. This includes coming up with a "safe place" (can be real or imagined), nurturing and protective figures, etc. Once you both feel you are ready, your therapist will explain how EMDR works, introduce the various components, etc. He/she will help you decide which type of bilateral stimulation feels best to you (some people prefer eye movements, some prefer headphones, holding the tappers, etc). Once you've done this, you will begin by identifying the issue you want to work on. The therapist will ask you some questions, such as what the worst part was, what negative belief you have about yourself, and ask you to rate how disturbing it feels. She will then ask you to hold the image, belief, etc. and just let whatever comes up come up while she adds the bilateral stimulation. She will periodically stop you and ask what's happening. Eventually, you will process through the event, and will no longer have the negative belief---in fact you may see it through a different lense, and it should have less charge to it.
