Who are gifted children what problems do they face?if there any difference between a gifted child and prodigy
should they be taught separate classes set apart for them?
Answer:
I don't believe there are "gifted" children. Not in the way most people refer to them, anyway.
Everything is stress-diathesis. Not only does the predisposition have to be present, but the opportunity as well. Any "normal" child can be taught good study habits and work ethics if they are reinforced regularly. That is the "stress" part. If the child has an abnormal ability to learn then this may or may not be hindered, but for most children it's just a case of the right guidance.
Then there is the "diathesis" element. The child must then have the opportunity to follow through with the habits and ethics that it has been taught. If no environment allows this, then effective learning cannot be achieved.
There are those that attempt to "push" a child along a given path (be it music, chess, or beauty contests) but neglect other areas of development while focusing on a single base of knowledge or skill. This is not making a child into a "prodigy". This is training in one area at the expense of retarding others. It's simply a trade off.
All children have things that interest them, and in rare instances the child will have a certain innate ability for an interest that gives them an "edge", but that's all it really is.
So to recap: If you don't encourage your child, then don't expect them to be a genius. If you don't ensure your child has a good environment to work and learn in, don't expect them to be a genius. If your child is only encouraged by sources that are mediocre (advertising, poor entertainment, peer pressure) then don't expect them to be a genius. If you only focus on one aspect of your child's development, then they will be more likely to become retarded, despite the fact they are really good at one thing. And just because your child is good at something, that will not "by itself" make them a genius.
But the good news: Almost any child can be a genius.
a prodigy is a genius and a gifted child is above average. yes they should definitely be in different classes.
