I'm Shy And Have A Habit Of Swallowing When i'm In A Nervous Situation?
I try and hide it by looking down/doing up my coat zip (lol) or eating/drinking, but I still do it anyway. Anyone know any advice
Answer:
breath more, drink more water during the day and the only way to stop being nervous is to realize someone else might be feeling this way. the truth is everyone is human and has these emotions. Look the people in the eye and smile and imagine a calm wave of love washing over your chest, it will help.
try breathing instead. take in a slow, deap breath through your nose - hold for for a couple seconds - release slowly through your mouth. i have anxiety and this really helps.
Maybe your mouth is dry. If you are in a situation where you can have a beverage, maybe you can take a sip of some water to smooth the throat.
As previous psoter said, try some breathing techniques. http://panicdisorder.about.com/od/shbrea...
The good news is, your swallowing is probably not very noticable to other people.
swallowing (empty swallowing) is a normal action and is brought about to clear the saliva in your mouth. When you get nervous you can produce an extra amount of saliva due to the extra secretion of cortisol and excitation of your sympathetic (fight or flight) nerves. This makes you swallow and can eventually make you swallow enough to make your mouth very dry. Buy some salt tablets from any convenient store and try and suck on some of those if you find yourself about to swallow. however, it is a normal reaction..just think of your body as better than everyone elses because you are extra sensitive to these situations. The more you focus on little things that your body does the more you think everyone else is too. Trust me, this is not the case. Everyone has some habit they do with their own body to keep their body and mind at ease. We all just learn to cope with it and not focus on it.
