What can one do to "open up" to others?
I know it is healthy to express ones emotions and thoughts to a trustworthy friend, but sometimes it might be more difficult then expected. So what can one do to express these thoughts and emotions, especially when one does not have a close friend to share it with? Suggestions...
Answer:
Turn to creative arts even if you are no good at it. Drawing, painting, water colors, sculpting, writing, music, acting or anything creative will work. Put yourself and your feelings into what you create and give it to the world so that others will understand how you feel.
When these analyse yourself self improvement books tell you to open up in a healthy way to other people they usually add the disclaimer that most other people have not read the book and are wandering round hurting each other in a sort of blind man's buff. Moreover, on a practical level, they advise various levels of clearance with different people-an employer will use information you have given him to enforce lower pay and conditions on you and even friends and lovers or should I say especially they will use confidential disclosures you have made to them to bludgeon you into submission when an argument develops.
Obviously certain professionals have confidentiality codes and most notably priests in the confessional and this surely is the reason for its existence but government here in Britain is making noises about cross sharing information.
Consider the following quote re a judge's recommendation that paedophiles should not be automatically be jailed - 'such is the scale of the problem [paedophilia] that adults who feel that they are starting to become attracted to children are deterred from seeking treatment because of the punishments and an automatic jail sentence'.Someone who is troubled by intrusive thoughts, non schizophrenic in nature, possibly low blood sugar in origin, who could they trust.?
If you look at a British newspaper such as the Star with its brutish attitudes reflecting the basic lack of sophistication of the majority of the country, could you trust these neanderthals with the outpourings of this very dodgy biological computer that you have between your ears.I think not. There are many ways to 'express' yourself. If you want to be more verbally expressive, take a course in public speaking!
Remember, practice makes perfect!
