Although, obviously it is not a desirable situation, not to mention how depressing it would be, still, there are a number of POWs who have endured exact same thing and came out without going completely insane.
After a certain point it becomes a mind game. A weaker mind could fall apart where a stronger one would train itself to run thoughts through it to endure the case without going berserk.
You would lose sense of time and feel paranoid, but you would have to be able to have an inner conversation with yourself - as ironic as it might sound- to stay sane.
It is a form of torture, many people went through it with the majority coming out still sane.

You would get something like hallucinations, but it would be an effect of the total darkness on your eyes, not something happening in your brain.
I've never heard anything like that. I'd be willing to try it though. I bet if you were somewhere safe you could get a lot of thinking done (not to mention sleeping). However, I have heard that if you are in complete and total darkness for around 36 hours, your eyes never recover and you go blind...but I don't think that makes sense either.

Your teacher must have been kidding you. Blind people dont go completely insane. Whether born blind or develop blindness.
