What are the psychology approaches about and how should I know which to seek?
Answer:
That's an incredibly wide question. Of the various approaches out there, it seems to me that cognitive-behavioural therapy is properly the dominant type today. It`s good for depression and anxiety. Research suggests that the quality of your relationship with your therapist is probably the most important variable in how effective therapy is, regardless of approach. I also think that most therapists out there would describe themselves as 'eclectic', meaning that they are not wedded to any particular approach.
The answer above is excellent, considering the breadth of your question. I would add that when you consider a therapeutic approach, you might consider what your problems are and how they could be remedied. If you are very emotional and dwell on your feelings a lot, especially on feeling hurt and wronged, then you might consider the work of Byron Katie and do at least a dozen of her worksheets, which you can download free. (www.thework.com) If you obsess about things and are in your head a lot, an action approach such as psychodrama would be helpful. Make sure you see someone who is TRAINED in psychodrama. You can find someone local at www.asgpp.org. All of these modalities offer something specific and helpful.
