If someone talks to a "person" who is not there, what does this mean?

Say,e.g-the person frequently does this, and it isn't just harmless, sometimes it's shouting, and they can't seem to stop.Is it loneliness that causes this?

Answer:
Crazy!
could be loneliness. could be just how that 'person' deals with things. It's not madness if the person knows that they are talking to no one. If they are worried, maybe a visit to a doc wouldn't hurt
They could be suffering from Schizophrenia
yeah could have an invisible friend
I know of an 8 yr old girl who has talked to her "sister" since she was old enough to talk.
Okay, the "sister" is actually an imaginary friend but the two of them converse like two seperate people!
The 8 yr old girl is otherwise smart, outgoing and creative.
She also has no other kids her age to play with.
So, depending on the situation, yes, I'd say they develop these alternate personalities from lonliness and in some cases (drugs or schizophrenia), there is a psychosis involved.
yeah, maybe the person have a mental problem
sounds like tourets??
telepathy?

It can be one of 4 things
1) he is talking to an imaginary friend or may be fantasizing aloud but is not crazy
2) he is rehearsing for a part
3) he is talking to a spirit or someone from a different dimension

A third of people who experience auditory hallucinations have NO PSYCHIATRIC conditions! People can experience auditory hallucinations for many reasons i.e: loneliness, bereavement, sensory deprivation, during religious phenomena, out-of-body experiences and as a result of some medications; therefore not necessarily “crazy”. Auditory hallucination can be linked to many psychiatric or neurological disorders, including: bio-polar disorder, epilepsy, schizophrenia (not necessarily paranoid), stroke and dementia.

If you are worried about someone then it is a good idea to speak to a GP etc because auditory hallucinations can be very distressing and they may need some support. However, to reiterate people who experience auditory hallucinations are not crazy and can live very happy fulfilled lives. For more information visit: Hearing Voices Network.

Hope this helps
