Can anybody inform me why YAWNING is so contagious?

Usually 75% of humans will yawn after another person has yawned, is there any scientifical data or proof of this phenonmenom?

Answer:
One person gets tired and reminds other people they are tired.

Same with throwing up. But that's because if people see it, or hear or smell it. Like on a roller coaster. It's usually hot out then too. And people eat wierd foods at the carnival.

I used to have to clean off the rides. I learned to look at a lot of gross things without throwing up.
I think they did something on this on Myth Busters. It's been a while since I saw the episode. But, I think they got only a slight result for it being contagious.

May want to go look it up.
Yes. I just read an article the other day about yawning on www.sciencedaily.com. They were saying that yawning makes a person more alert, by cooling the brain. They said that it makes other people yawn too because it helps to keep the whole group more alert.
It only seems contagious, because you share the same air. One of the reasons why yawning happens is if you are short on oxygen. If you are in the same enclosed area with your firends, you will all yawn.
