has this happened to anyone else?

is there some explaination for this phenom?

Answer:
I think most everyone has experienced this falling sensation. It's called a hypnagogic myoclonic. You should google it and read about it. Very interesting.
You might have accidentally gone to the edge of the bed and the body's balancing mechanism might have restored your proper position. It has happened to me earlier and keeps happening . Don't worry ; it is perfectly normal.
speak with your doctor you may need to go to a sleep lab for help
this happens to me a lot, usually when i am actually "falling" to sleep, it is an intense feeling of loss of control and I actually jerk as if to stop the fall

here is a website about hypnic jerk, which is the medical term for it

You could have an inner ear infection as this effect equilibrium and give a falling sensation and a dizzy loss of control like falling. Sleep apnea can cause a falling feeling until one brings in sufficient oxygen.
it happens to me too. my mom always just told me that that's when you fall deeply alseep very fast.
i think its happened to everyone. There was a rumor going around for a while that "if you have a dream your falling, and you acutally land, you die while your sleeping"
This strange falling sensation and muscle twitch is known as a hypnagogic myoclonic twitch or “Hypnic jerk” If this has happened to you on more than one occasion, don’t worry, you are not alone because most everyone experiences it. It usually occurs soon after you've nodded off to sleep.
It is quite normal, a lot of people have it and the link explains why. Also if you are stressed that can cause it. Don't be startled by it, learn to enjoy it.
