Regarding nailbiting.?

When it gets very serious ie. to the quick could it be classed as self-harming behaviour? If so, why would a person do this? Thanks.

Answer:
..This is an ingrained habit, caused by the neurotic desire to gain control of aspects of life which are feared to be in danger of going out of control. When such a person senses things aren't going their way, the habit kicks in. They probably don't realize they are doing it most of the time. They don't recognize it as a self-mutilating behavior.
